Post Mr. Big - Hair band?
As I was flipping through the channels at my Mom's house the other day I stumbled upon Dee Snider hosting this VH1 show about 80s butt rock. Sure as shit at #26 there was Mr. Big. Of course they had a couple of choice shots of Paul spinning around in the "Wind me up" video and the obligatory "To be with you" video clip. The band was described as being a super group thanks to the bass playing of Billy Sheehan and the "soulful" singing of Eric Martin.

That got me thinking about 80s butt rock... Was Mr. Big a butt rockin' poser band? They certainly did the big hair and makeup bit in the videos... Eric Martin did look like a chic 99.9% of the time and the lyrics to most of their songs were flat out butt rock. On top of that I first saw them as the opening band for Winger. The thing is at the time (late 80s) I didn't think of them as butt rock because they really could play. Was I fooling myself?

It was because of Eric Martin. He just looked like a chick. He seems like the kind of guy that would throw a temper tantrum or pout if he doesn’t get his way.

Wasn't it because that, apart from the musicianship, the songs were just candy-ass rock?

No offence to Paul but I was never a great Mr Big fan - although the first album rocked.

I don't want people to think that I'm dissing Paul (or Billy). I just never got into Mr Big.

There was some terrific guitar playing on those albums but I just could never get into Eric's voice and that made the songs sound weak.

Only my opinion - please don't take offence!

If Mr. Big was a hair band was DLR and Van Halen? How about Racer X (late '80s era)?

Who was the first hair band?

sure the members of all those bands had some hair *lol* - but that's all the mentioned had (or still have) in common. most of those bands had killer songs (jani lane of warrant for example is one of the best songwriters !!! ever!!!), some of them killer guitarplayers und a few of them both. when listening to albums like pull (this winger-album is an underrated milestone in hard rock!!) , dokken's tooth and nail (george lynch is god!), loudness or even racer x, i do enjoy great songs with great technique. same with mr. big.

does anyone here really care about some fucked up photos of old times when having a good time listening to cool songs..?

anyway: mr. big was a cool band (today my faves are lean into it and hey man) with bad hair. eric martin looked exactely like my aunt....
