1) Jimi Hendrix (perhaps the most original player and even a great influence for Paul Gilbert)

2) Paul Gilbert (great guitarist, songwriter and teacher, the full package)

3) Eric Clapton ( some very simple stuff , but effective guitar licks)

4) Yngwie Malmsteen (some good shreddin n blues)

5) Van Halen ...maybe (good technique and than but maybe overused the fretboard taping)

There are other great guitarists out there that I can't think of just now. Like Michael Angelo. Unbelievable, but too much of a show off.

Talk about a difficult topic!!!!

1.) Eddie Van Halen--Great rhythm chops and lead chops. AEWSOME tone. Fav solo is from " Drop Dead Legs"

2.) Paul Gilbert--Great EVERYTHING. Fav solo is from " Superheroes "

3.) Hendrix--Listen to " Machine Gun. " Nuff said!

4.) Frank Zappa--Just about anything from his guitar box sets will help anyone understand polyrhythms. Good stuff and where Vai cut his teeth on.

5.) Greg Howe--Just about anything from this guy is amazing to listen to.

Other than Gilbert stuff, check out recordings from those listed above and here are a few more:

Shawn Lane--Personae ( available at Audiophileimports.com )

Hiram Bullock--Way Kool ( this was the guitarist in The Late Nite Dave Letterman Band back in the early eighties. GREAT guitarist folks!!! ).

Steve Vai--The Ultra Zone

Yngwie Malmsteen--Inspriation--He does great versions of Deep Purple and Hendrix stuff

Take care!

The solo from machine gun (and the rest of the song) is great but not ANYTHING near Jimis best. Jimi was able to change the world of guitar and set the benchmark for tones in guitar. Prime examples include Foxy Lady and Love or Confusion. I can't think of one guitarist in the world who doesn't think the solos from Along The Watctower are amongst the best ever written in history. As Zakk Wyled says himself, ,u can play those 3 solos on any guitar and on any amp in the world and they would still sound unbe-fucking-lievable. Even Burning of the midnight lamp - Jimi would use a wah wah on a harp! Genius! (R U Experienced, with the backwards solo which makes u feel as if ur going back in time 1000 years) Oh , and perhaps one of the most famous licks known to man - Voodoo Child Slight Return...Many think Jimi is over rated, but he is actually very under rated. Every song, every lick , every chord, every solo, the work of a mastermind.

1) Paul Gilbert

2) John Petrucci

3) Chris Impellitteri

4) Eddie Van Halen

5) Gary Rossington and Allen Collins

My first two switch back and forth frequently. Chris Impellitteri just entered my list a couple days ago. He and Eddie are pretty close. Gary Rossington and Allen Collins are the two people responsible for getting me hooked on guitar. They're awesome players too. SKYNYRD ROCKS!!!

Whoa, whoa, whou there fruitcake! Not one mention of GREG HOWE???? Are you guys nuts? Listen to HOWE II High Gear, NOT that whacky jazz that he plays now. That disc, along with the first 2 Racer x, will still give you a BONER! Its a shame that Greg never got the pub back in the day that Gilbert-Becker-Kotzen got... I thought he was even better than those guys.

Post my top 5
1.- Tony Iommi (just like ozzy said "he is the master of the metal riffs")
2.- Ritchie Blackmore
3.- Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck
4.- Paul Gilbert and guys like Stevie Salas, Dario Mollo
5.- Akira Takasaki (he has been a great influence to me nowadays)

Tony iommi is up there because black sabbath is the very first metal band I ever heard so the first tunes I actually wanted to play were killing yourself to live, sweet leaf, and so on...
