The Legendary Compass Point Recording Studios
I was at Compass Point Studios a month or so ago. Compass Point is where many great hard-rock/heavy-metal albums were recorded (AC/DC's "Back in Black," Iron Maiden's "Piece of Mind," "Powerslave," and "Somewhere in Time," Judas Priest's "Turbo," Leatherwolf's "Leatherwolf" and "Street Ready" and many more.) These days- The studio gets lots of high-profile clients like Puff Daddy,Mariah Carey,Shania Twain,Celine Dion, etc. that "lock out" the facility at $15,000 a week. The two 24 track tape machines that recorded all of those classic albums are still used, but they sit in a "closet" of sorts collecting dust! The digital recording power of Pro Tools has taken over. The old console, however, is still heavily used. It was very cool to be in the same room where Maiden recorded "The Trooper" and "Aces High." The infamous pool table where Jeff Martin played Julio Iglesias is still in the "rustic" lounge area. The same pool table also appeared in a few of Maiden's mid-80s promo photos. (The manager of Compass Point, Terry Manning, told me that Steve Harris had stopped by the studio a week or so earlier to discuss something with the studio!!!!) I plan to return to Compass Point next year to master Forgotten Realm's second CD...maybe I will get lucky and run into a metal legend. Take care.
