Changing from Anchoring to Non Anchoring?
Hi,
I'm new to this forum... and relatively new at guitar playing.
I started around a year ago and I always anchored but recently its starting to hurt my arm pretty badly when I play for a long period of time so I've decided to stop anchoring. So far it's not going to well...
Whilst I can like play most easy things without anchoring I keep finding myself anchoring whenever I try to play and speedy passages or phrases that me change strings frequently, even if it isn't string skipping.
So I was wondering if anyone has tips for me to build up my speed and precision again!
Thank you!

The tip is: Keep at it. You just have to get used to playing differently. It'll take time. I know, I've been there.

Play songs. Do some strumming. Try to play a little bit of everything, limiting yourself is never a good idea... unless you're Yngwie

Re: Changing from Anchoring to Non Anchoring?
It took me only a month to achieve my former shred glory after I changed to non-anchoring picking. Since you've played for only a year, it could be even easier. I had played for seven years when I changed to non-anchoring approximately a year ago and I changed the way how I hold the pick a couple of months ago, too. It wasn't that hard either, took me merely a couple of days to get used to it.

To throw a spanner in the works, I never managed it and it gave me wrist problems

Just be a little more aware of it - look down at your picking hand and stop yourself anchoring. Take breaks and stretch your wrist/rotate it for a while so that it doesn't become rigid. Play rhythm too
