Post should I sell my Ibanez 1550
Hey guys,
I have an Ibanez 1550 with maple fretboard. I love the guitar (not the pickups though) and as GAS is hitting me,
I was thinking about two/three options:
should I get an Epiphone Zakk Wylde? Is it worth the trade in? It would cost me 540 Euro
should I get a BC Rich Mockingbird ST? Is it worth it? It would cost 650 Euro
Or should I just change the pickups on my Ibanez and that's it? (in this case, is DiMarzio Liquifire and Super3 a good option? Or would You consider Seymour Duncan SH-1 and SH-4? I don't know how those would sound in a basswood guitar with maple fretboard like mine.. maybe too much treble?! Or is DiMarzio Air Nortan in Neck and PAF in the bridge an option? I play mainly legato style shred...)
Thank You for any thoughts on this!
Dino

Well you just said that you love your Ibanez 1550 but don't like the pickups, so to me the most practicle and cheapest decision would be to upgrade the pickups (IMO those Epiphones are hit or miss and BC Rich isn't really quite what they used to be).

As far as what pickups to choose? Well that is personal preference. The only thing I can suggest is to find a player you admire who you know plays on a guitar with a basswood body and look into what pickups they use (FYI: if you like Paul Gilbert and Joe Satriani they both play on basswood bodied guitars  ).

BTW if you are an admirer of Guthrie Govan... on the Aristocrats tour (2011) Guthrie has been playing on a basswood body guitar (with a maple top). He goes over it and the pickups in the video I have linked below
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Fp5YzkES0Q

Good luck with what ever you decide! 8)

Also, the 1550 is a Prestige Ibanez. That is miles ahead in terms of playability, quality, and worth in comparison to the Epi Zakk Wylde and the Mockingbird. I say, keep it and just swap the PUPs like you wanted to in the other thread.

Yet still inferior to the much cheaper 550 :P

I don't know why the Prestige guitars are so expensive now. I remember I got mine for like $600 or something but that was in 2004 and it was a 2002 model (with the old Wizard neck).

Well 10 years ago you could get a mint 90's 550 for $200. People were practically giving them away.

Yeah, I wonder why. The 550s were so good. They were made in Japan and they had maple fretboards AND they had fancy colors. I mean come on.

Meh. I'd stick with the 1550 and swap the PUPs. Are you just GAS-ing? What kind of guitar are you looking for exactly?

How about you get an ESP Horizon? Those are always good. You can get them for as low as 1,100 to 1,300 USD on eBay.

yeah but I wanted to trade in the 1550 and get another one, so I would pay that much less... didn't want to spend more than 300-400 Euro (about 500$)
