I read both articles and besides the fact that they're buried in debts, what else am I missing? I don't get why people hate Guitar Center as well. It may be because I'm not from the US. Can anyone explain?

I lived in the US for nearly a year, and during that period, I went to guitar center almost every weekend.

I never had a problem with their staff. In fact, they were always very cool and helpful.

I went to the US two more times after that, and the GC I used to visit was still a cool place. Sure, some of the guitars had rusty strings on, and were out of tune, but it was still a good place to go and get gear.

In fact, last time I had a very cool guy to help me get my Seagul Acoustic Guitar. They were out of stock, the guy called GC main stock, found out they had only 2 left and ordered one for me right away. I had a discount coupon, and I got 100 bucks off it!

I had an okay service too but I think this is because I'm not from the USA. TBH, whenever I'm there I always get this happy vibe because everyone is so friendly. I mean, if you guys think Canadians are friendly, I think YOU guys are friendly. That's how different it is. It's not even about hospitality, it's just the whole feel and how people interact with each other.

Anyway, I don't mean to imply that you guys are just being whiny, but maybe it's the other way around and I'm just used to the shittier customer service we have here

Guitar Center like is a monopoly, from what I've heard from friends that have worked there. They have a stranglehold on Fender/Gibson products among others... And they make it near impossible for small time music stores to compete, unless you're like Tone Merchants and sell botique gear like Suhr and Andersons.

Yes, they are a big company and small shops close down because they can't compete with GC prices.

It seems that GC prices have been based on discounts that the company itself couldn't afford to simply give away. Their financial situation seems to be horrible, and I can't think of a simple strategy from the top of my head to get around that...

That's how the whole country operates.

Yeah, kind of. The State itself monopolizes several services, and this is not a bad thing, depending on your view of what the State should do.

The big difference between a country having a big dibit and a company having one is that the latter needs a profit to survive.

I don't know if anyone noticed as well, on sites like musicians friend, they have stopped those deals that let you pay every month for an order...probably lost too much money because of those deals.
