Post Going price on a pgm500 **UPDATE** NGD!
UPDATE: Bought the guitar. Thanks for the help in this thread guys. Can't wait to play this thing all the time. Also for PAO I made a shout out to you in the video.

I am thinking about (heavily considering) buying a pgm500 because it is one of my favorite ones and isn't too common like the 300. My question is what is the range they usually go for? The one I have found used to be $1,199.000

Anybody know what these usually go for?

I asked for more pictures because the one given is too small to see any of the scratches or dings it may or may not have but what would be the price or one in reasonably good condition?

UPDATE: Here are the pictures of said pgm500

Depending on it's condition, I'd say 800-ish? The 500 is kind of "common" for a PGM so I wouldn't pay too much if it isn't pristine. Don't take my word for it, though. Wait for a couple of more replies :) Maybe you can bargain with the seller?

It's a major chain store so...not sure if they would do that. Won't hurt to ask.

It looks pretty decent but I'm sure you can score better 500s on eBay at a much lower price. Can you ask for photos of the fretwear and if there are any dings/chips present?

I mentioned to the employee via email that I was going to continue to watch the price because the 999 was on the high side for what it is worth so I feel bad asking for more pictures after, BUT it is guitar center so they do have a 30 day return policy. I do want a pgm200 but that I feel is asking to much to find so this guitar is my next choice.

No, man. I think asking for dings/fretwear is a pretty valid question. I'd say $1000 is an okay price if it was pristine. The PGM500s I usually see are beat up and they go for 600-800ish. Just looking at the photos he provided, it looked like it wasn't played much. Dings on the back of the guitar and on the headstock plus the gold hardware is wearing off which is normal. Fretwear and any cracks on the neck joint will finish off how much the guitar really is.

The PGM200 is pretty hard to find man. It's one of the rarer PGMs (I think it was released only in Japan?). Also, the PGM200 prototype is the nicer color. The one released to the public turns a little green and doesn't have pink sharkfin frets which is kind of sad :(

Here, you be the judge. EKG was our resident specialist who's disappeared (along with JasonK, bless his soul).

That was posted back in 2004. That thing EKG linked looks pristine. Now I feel $999 for this guitar you're bidding on is a bit too high, but it's 2012 now so I don't know.

Post Re: Going price on a pgm500
i agree that it may still be too high. I have just been wanting a pgm for a while now and I have $600 currently and when I return from college will return to work to get more $$$. I don't want a 300/301 or 100 so I feel like this guitar is my next best bet. They never come on Craigslist near where I live, and I don't really trust random people on the internet (I know most people here are honest but you must understand the concern). So when it comes to places like guitarcenter they also don't have pgm's often. I don't know what to do, maybe just keep watching the guitar, it has gone down $200 since it was first put online many months ago. Guess I will just wait it out. Thanks for all the help.

I don't think I'd get a 300/301 or 100 either. I have been recently really liking the 401 but it's so expensive and it was limited to only a year :/ If I could get a custom prototype 200, I would!

My educated guess is GC paid anywhere from $450-$600 for that guitar. What you do with that information is up to you :)

If you can talk them down a little go ahead and get it. Id even consider it if they won't budge. I don't think 999 is that high if its in good shape. It looks like it has a few small dings and some yellowing.

A 200 even well used will run you quite a bit more. IMO the 500 is a better sounding guitar, I own both. Of the ones I own the 500 and 800 are better sounding guitars then some of the rarer models like the 200, 700, and 10th.

I don't see a volute below the headstock. This may be the first 94 model ive seen with the 2 piece neck. Ive previously only come across 95 models with the 2 piece neck. Most of the 94's have the 1 piece neck. For more info and pictures you can consult the PGM models thread http://racerx.edutom.co.uk/board/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=9679

Can I buy your 200? :P But on a serious note what is your opinion about a 94 model having a 2 piece neck? I don't think guitar center could get duped into buying a fake. A replacement neck? I am hoping the whole thing is original.

When I put the serial number into this website http://guitardaterproject.org/ibanez.aspx

I get this response

"Guitar Info
Your guitar was made at the
Fuji-gen Plant, Japan
1994
Production Number: 27167 "

I would suspect it is real. The transition from 1 piece to 2 had to occur at some time. I have yet to come across a 95 with 1 piece. So my guess is that the transition was late 94 when they ran out of 1 piece necks.

Its not easy to get replacement necks for some of these models. Reverse headstock hardtail RG's were pretty rare. I have heard Ibanez would want you to send them the old neck before they would send you a replacement.

It looks like a nice guitar. The 500 has always been one of my favorites.

I think I am gonna see if I can get it for closer to $800-$850. If I can I will snatch it up.

UPDATE: Pulled the trigger on this thing when it got down to $899. Will post a picture when I get it. Shipping was only $10 from Texas from the guitarcenter there. AWESOME.
