I'm not talking bout jazz, there's plenty of jazz players that rehash the same bullshit bebop licks as well, and that's just as boring.

I'm just saying, the reason why guys like the first dude aren't famous is because it's not really offering anything new and exciting to people who already like neoclassical metal.

I know.

But if I'm honest, I can't dig anything Jeff Loomis has done either. Or Andy James. Or any "shredder" for that matter.

I realized that I don't care much about blazing fast licks and stuff like that anymore. Seriously. I'm not saying I don't like it anymore, but I won't listen to a band or guitar player just because they have got fast solos.

Dream Theater is a band I like a lot and, surprise surprise, I wouldn't mind if John Petrucci slowed down a solo or played slower. I really dig their compositions. Same reason why my favorite bands are my favorite bands.

I've been listening to Opeth like a maniac for the last 24 hours, and I seriously don't recall any impressive solos.

So, I think the bottom line here is... I don't know!

I guess if you are to play a crazy ass solo, create a cool riff to go with it!

I agree. I've also grown out of shred.

But the shred I loved when I was 16 I still love today. I just came to realise over time that I loved this shred for other reasons than it being fast. Paul shreds, Buckethead shreds, Van Halen shreds, Yngwie shreds, but they all have something awesome about their compositions.

I just thought I only liked it fast, turned out it wasn't just that. I still love the exiting feel of a fast stream of notes ripping through, but it has to be melodic.

Hey man I love Petrucci too but to be honest, if I heard the new DT albums but didn't know they were DT, I would be like, "Hey this is okay but nothing special". Their greatest album is (and will always be) Metropolis part II. I really don't like all the trying-really-hard-to-be-metal stuff they have recently. He's still amazing, don't get me wrong.

I'm more inclined to listen to musicians who improvise a lot anyway. It doesn't even have to be a jazz thing, it's just something I really enjoy. Probably cause I like being surprised with new stuff.

I will contribute my thoughts to this thread once I've gathered enough cause I feel like I've a lot to say about this topic but I wanna shorten it

It's funny, lately I've been going back to Images and Words and really missing that Petrucci. He was more colorful. In a weird way (and I don't mean to diss JP as he was a huge influence on me) I feel like his playing matured backwards.

I hear you.

I feel exactly the same. His solos now are blazing fast, but most of them are just... boring.

Just check his solos on the G3 tour with Paul.

Same here man!

The only shreddy music I can really dig these days is Periphery (I got into them really late), because that is some sick composing right there! And yeah, going to music school and ending up in the same class as people like Jack Gardiner (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qIkiZbczOw), who's just 18 years old, makes you realize that you rather wanna create something than be the best!

I guess I suck enough to consider myself a "shredder", and have no chance on being a jazz guy.

I might switch to drums

Haha, you may be onto something; not only do you get a chair but you can wear shorts without looking like Angus Young! :D

Loved Gardiner, hated Periphery.

Depends what you listen to and when. It's all about good timing and scheduling. That in itself is an art form.

I've gone on month long Queen binges, listening to the first 3 albums back to back on repeat, and I've never grown tired of Brian May's playing. Its a good thing you can't get too much of.
