In a recent interview with Revolver magazine, DREAM THEATER guitarist John Petrucci stated about the departure of the band's drummer and founding member Mike Portnoy, "I love Mike. We've known each other for so long… I met him when I was, what, 17? We went to Berklee [College Of Music] together. We went through everything. He's an awesome guy.

"It was a heartbreaking chapter in our lives, but it's just one of those things in life where there's a big change, and you don't expect it, and what matters is the way face that change. You can embrace it or you can run from it. We just chose to move on."

On the topic of "A Dramatic Turn Of Events", Petrucci said, "It's everything that makes DREAM THEATER what it is. It's all our elements — metal elements, progressive elements, melodic elements, and all the playing and fusion elements we've always had. I try to stay pure to the initial conception of our band; we're a progressive band and we're a metal band, mixed.

"We always try to push some sort of boundary and do something that's a little bit different, some sort of element we haven't done before. You'll hear that for sure. You don't want to repeat yourself, but at the same time it's important to stay focused on what makes up the sound of the band.

Saw DT Friday night at The Grove in Anaheim.....

 JEEEEEEEEZZZZZ I had forgot just how friggin awesome these bastards were live..... They definitely have their "mojo" back with Mangini in the band... Mangini later posted that he had just played one of the BEST SHOWS OF HIS LIFE eventhough he was seriously ill and apologized for not being able to meet with fans or speak to them very long before and after the show...

so it appears that the answer is a resounding "YES!!!"....there IS indeed life after Portnoy.... :chew:

Seriously?

I saw them last year and I wanted to go home midway through their set.

They played some amazing tunes, but the only reason why the band seemed alive to me was Mike Portnoy. Petrucci, Labrie and Myung didn't move the entire concert. No crowd interaction.

The only two guys in the band who showed some life were stuck playing drums and keyboards....

I had the same impression of Dream Theater during their Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence tour. I felt like I was watching a group of musically inclined statues. It didn't bother me very much, but the band should have at least appeared excited to be playing on stage in front of thousands of fans. Symphony X, at a smaller venue only a few years earlier and playing in front of maybe a few hundred people, was far more interesting to watch.

Go see DT on this tour.....You'll see a big difference.....

Reminds me of VH on the 5150 tour with Sammy, they were all happy again jumping around having fun again on stage...
