 Server maintenance
I've got a spot of server maintenance planned for this (GMT) evening, guys. The site will probably go down around 2 to 3 hours after this thread was posted. It's a bit of a monster of a change server-wise, but I'll try to be as quick as I can without screwing anything up Also: don't worry, I have backups

 Re: Server maintenance
Half way there! For those who want to know: the board runs on a VPS which, until about 5 minutes ago, ran ubuntu 8.04 + a bunch of custom apt repos. It's always been kept patched and up to date, but I never had a need great enough to justify the downtime needed for a full upgrade. It's now running 10.04, and should soon be running 11.04. You can't go straight from 8.04 to 11.04 - hence the half way point. (I actually have to go to 10.10 before I can go to 11.04, but that's much less of a big deal) I've just taken another backup and I'm about to start the move to 11.04. Wish me luck

 Re: Server maintenance
Annnddd... Kernel swapped and we're on 10.10. One more to go; a bit bigger than the last.

 Re: Server maintenance
Thanks for uh... Whatever you did. I don't understand 20% of what you were doing anyways, but I know it's for good!

 Re: Server maintenance
Hi!
As a matter of interest: Is there any reason for using ubuntu instead of debian (or any other server-distribution)?

I do like debian and I run it on a few of my smaller servers at home; but Ubuntu is more popular (and therefore community support is better), has a quicker release cycle, includes newer packages (e.g. debian is stil on PHP 5.2.* AFAIK, I use some 5.3 features in some things on this server) and a bunch of other small stuff.

 Re: Server maintenance
I'm guessing this has nothing to do with the main site being down?
(cue cries of "there's a main site?")
