Post Re: PAUL'S EQUIPMENT! (new members click here) UPDATED 17/05
It's a shame that EQ'ing options are limited on my i pod really, cos i'm addicted to "what if" despite my ears bleeding by the end of it. As a funny side note, when listening to "stranger in my life" through earphones, there's a part at 3:20 where, for some reason, eric's singing sounds really harsh! Anyone notice that?

To come back on track, i'm not hating on Paul's tone or anything, just definitely confirming it's crafted for LIVE playing

I copied this from Fuzz Universe Tour Thread...

My guess is

Boss TU2 - Ibanez AF2 - Boss DD3 - ___________ - HBE Detox EQ - MXR Phase 90 - Majix Box Fuzz Universe - Keeley Looper Japanese Apartment (MXR Phase 100 - MXR Blue Box Octave Fuzz)

Can somebody tell me whats the missing pedal, and pls correct me (if any)

That is Paul wearing those righteous boots, yes?

Speaking of Paul's rig, does anyone know for certain what pedals he was using for the Mr. Big concert at the Warfield back in '92? (Released on VHS/DVD) This has been puzzling me for too damn long!
Based on my own observation and what I've found out here and there, the chain was:
Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion >> Boss CS-3 Compression/Sustainer >> ______ >> A/DA Flanger (of course!!) >> ______ >> amplifier (Ampeg VL1002 -- awesomeness)
I think there's a chorus of some sort between the CS-3 and the A/DA, and possibly a boost pedal at the end, but I'm really not sure. The latter is not an amp footswitch - that I do know. Thanks for any info!

Hello Racer X Forum!

Let me start off by saying: I love this site. It's awesome. Congrats to whoever did this site!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2Z-aj0Ojyc

I'm sure a lot of you have seen this before.
I have an Ibanez RG550XX with Dimarzio Air Norton in the neck position and Tone Zone in the bridge postion (stock PU in the middle) and I'm about to get myself a Laney VC 50.
Would I be able to get a tone similar to the one in the video? Or does somebody know what gear Paul's using here? How does he get this massive tone?
I know tone comes from the fingers but gears matters too.

So my basic question is: Is the Laney VC50 what I'm looking for? I have to ask this way because I cant test one where I am...

I'm kinda new to posting stuff in a forum, so I'm sorry in case I'm doin anything wrong.

Well, a lot of the tone comes from PAF pro pickups (both positions) as they're said to sound 'fat'. And I think Paul used Ampeg amps at the time, and switched to Laney around "Hey Man" album (he was already playing Laney in 1995 for sure).

Remember that tone can be affected by everything. My guitar sounds completely different just by touching the headstock on my desk, for example.

With a VC50 you could get a similar tone by dialing in a Gilbert-ish setting and tweaking your guitar's volume and tone knob well enough. I think that's where a lot of that sound is coming from, as well as his pickups. I've got a set of shitty pickups and can kind of hit that tone, but my strings are flimsy and all over the place at the moment. Also note how he picks.

Yeah there's too many factors but you can kind of get there if you pay attention to the details. (And yeah I use a VC50)

Yea I use the same plectrum now. I switched a couple of months ago from Jazz III. At first the Dunlop .60 mm was a pain in the ass but it was worth keeping practicing with it. My over all tone sounds a lot better now.

Not really the pick he uses, just how he picks.

He cant hear the hi hats on the drums because he has tinnitus. This way he can see the drums so he knows when to come in.

Thought you guys might appreciate this:

Q. What amp settings do you use to keep your tone tight without losing definition when you're playing?

Paul: "On tour, I get to bring my favourite amps, but other times it's just a 'fly-in' so I have no idea what I'll be using until I get up there - I'm sure they're Marshalls but I don't know which model they are. That happens a fair amount of time.
Since I'm using singlecoils - they're hum-cancelling but they still tonally have the character of a singlecoil - I really have to back off the high end. So I'll end up having thr bass all the way up, the mid on about 2, the treble's on about 1.5, and the presence I'll keep up around 5. That tends to work for any model of Marshall. On the Vintage Moderns, which are the ones I prefer to use, I can turn the treble controls a little higher because that amp has a beefier low end - it really works well with the singlecoils."
