Bummer, but the reality is that these guys are getting old.

K.K. is 61 and that lifestyle of heavy touring, and giving it all you got onstage everynight for fans who have expectations of you putting on the same type of physical performance at 61 that you were giving at 31 can't be easy. Of course I wish I were blessed with that problem, but I don't think I could pull it off.

I wish all the luck in the world to one of the true metal pioneers!

It sucks but he's earned it.
My first concert was Testament-Megadeth-Judas Priest on the Painkiller tour. 20 years later and it's still easily the best show I've ever seen.

Well done Mr. Downing.

I can't say I'm all that surprised.

It must really suck to feel you HAVE to quit after playing in front of crowds, night after night, for about 4 decades.

I can't even comprehend how that would feel.

I just read that somewhere else. That's really shocking, specially considering that Priest would do their last tour. He must've been feeling really on the edge not to tour for the last time.

As much as he's a legendary part of the band, I always liked Glenn better. Oh well, I've seen them in 2008, and I'll go to their concert again this year!

Reportedly, KK Downing was in Judas Priest before Glenn Tipton joined.

I think I'll go and try to refresh my memory on Judas Priest's early history. It's been a while since I studied it.

This is true.

In fact, I think KK and Ian were the only 2 members of the band's first formation... or am I wrong?

According to Wikipedia, you're right...sort of. The original band was comprised of Al Atkins and a bunch of other guys. He approached K.K. Downing and Ian Hill who had another band called Freight and asked if he could be their singer suggesting that they use his old band's name. Again, that's what Wikipedia says.

I guess his leaving the band has to do with some band issues not his age or health. Here's a statement from KK cut from an article on Blabbermouth.

"Dear friends,

"It is with much regret that I will not be with you this summer.

"Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your concerns about my health. Please rest assured that I am OK.

"There has been an ongoing breakdown in working relationship between myself, elements of the band, and the band's management for some time. Therefore I have decided to step down rather than to tour with negative sentiments as I feel that this would be a deception to you, our cherished fans. However, I would urge you to please support the PRIEST as I have no doubt that it will be a show not to be missed.

"All my love and respect."

If I remember right, Judas Priest formed in 1968, but Rob Halford didn't join until 1971. From what I've heard, Rob Halford and John Hinch joined at the same time.

I've heard that there was at least one demo recorded with KK Downing, but not Glenn Tipton, before Glenn joined.

Post Re: KK Retires from Judas Priest
Aniruddh "Andrew" Bansal of Metal Assaultconducted a short interview with JUDAS PRIEST drummer Scott Travis at the third annual Revolver Golden Gods Awards, which took place last night (Wednesday, April 20) at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles, California.

On whether he's as shocked as everyone else at original JUDAS PRIEST guitarist Kenneth "K.K." Downing's decision to leave the band:

Scott Travis: "Oh yes, I sure am. Everyone has been asking me about it, but then K.K. is a legend, so I do expect everyone to ask me about it."

On what this means for PRIEST to embark on a "farewell" tour:

Scott Travis: "I think we'll go as long as we want to go. It's up to everyone in the band. It's a five-member unit and I'm going to hopefully rock when PRIEST decides to give it up. I want to stick around and do what I can do. We're all lucky to do this to begin with. It's a gift to be able to make music, travel the world, meet fans and do everything else."

On what he plans to do after PRIEST's final tour:

Scott Travis: "I don't know, I'm just going to continue rocking my guts out like I do and hopefully something will come around the corner and I'll keep rocking."

Downing released a statement earlier today blaming his departure from JUDAS PRIEST on "an ongoing breakdown in working relationship between myself, elements of the band, and the band's management for some time." He added that he "decided to step down rather than to tour with negative sentiments as I feel that this would be a deception to . . . our cherished fans."

JUDAS PRIEST members had previously stated that their "Epitaph" tour would be their last, but that they would continue recording, with a new album due for release next year.

The tour begins in Holland on June 7 with a series of dates scheduled throughout Europe this summer. They will then hit Brazil and Mexico in the fall. There has been no word on a U.S. leg of the tour.

This is all too weird...

Sounds like there was some tension between KK and someone else... or something like that.

Now, he has been playing with 3 of those guys for over 30 years... what does it take to make the guy quit band? :?

Exactly.

There were tensions between the members of the band their selves, or between them and management, as KK said in his press release.

Nevertheless, it is still awful news that this happened just before their last world tour, which deserved the band at its best condition...
