Post Marty Friedman's Carvin V220
Hey guys just wanted to share this with you.
I now own Marty's Carvin V220.
This is straight off http://www.carvinguitars.com/bbs/ as I am a member there.
So enjoy this you Marty Friedman/CACOPHONY/MEGADETH/CARVIN lovers/fans!!

Hey everybody,

I want you guys to be the first ones to know that I am now a proud owner of Marty Friedman's Red Carvin V220 which he used during the recording of Go Off!!, touring, clinics, ect between ‘88 and ’89 and of course Megadeth’s audition.

The whole reason why I got into Carvin was THIS guitar. When I first saw it on those ‘88/’89 Cacophony bootlegs I fell in love with its shape and tone, instantly.

Some people said it went for less than expected, well I agree. I expected it to go for around $5,000-$6,000 minimum but since Carvin is not as widespread as Jackson and Cacophony isn't as well known as Megadeth, well those factors definitely affected the final price. I bid on it because I truly love the V220 and Cacophony and this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a guitar from one of my favorite guitarists/musicians. And of course I am glad that my money will go to aid the victims in Japan. It was a very generous thing Marty did and is still doing.

I am NOT one of those people that buys guitars with history and puts them behind glass, never to be played again. After I post this I will inspect it, set it up, put on a new set of 9’s and test it out. I will have to be careful not to cause any unnecessary damage since it is a special guitar but I will be using it as much as my other Carvin.

It actually arrived today, it’s just out of the box and I took many photos, unfortunately my camera is only a 5.0 MP. Sorry if some photos are a little fuzzy or dark.

Here are the photos, most are up close and I also thought I’d give some info on the setup and how everything is on this beauty.

Enjoy! :D

Image
Case is in a very good condition a few scuffs but the middle latch has been twisted though. The spring latches work perfectly.

Image
Carvin metal badge, a little loose so I’ll have to get my screwdriver!

Image
CACOPHONY ON TOUR!! Watch Out!!

Image
A bunch of other vintage stickers: Japanese, Radio and D'Addario XL World Tour VIP PASS patch.

Image

Image
Vintage Airline Baggage Tags!! Dated 87/88: LAX, USAIR SFO, JAPAN AIR LINES and a couple others. There is also a sticker w/Marty’s old address. They are so delicate after 20+ years I have actually carefully removed them so they don’t get destroyed any more.

Image
The interior of the case is also in good condition.

Image
The white sticker w/Japanese writing...I don’t know what is says though!! It was already torn when Marty auditioned for Megadeth.

Two more stickers w/Japanese writing are on the back of the case.

Image
Strings look like 10’s but get very heavy, up to 54. Action set to about 2mm from 24th fret, just the way I like it!!

Image
The Kahler Pro/2300 has some wear. It looks like it was never removed, the bolts are rusty and the whole underneath is corroded. No bar though...

Image
The neck PU is set really low, in the Megadeth audition Marty picked the stings between the FB and neck PU.

Image
Frets are medium jumbo and after all that 80’s shredding are still in very good condition.

Image
FB is in a VERY good condition, no dents. Not one!!

Image
Strap pins don’t looks original, but still look nice.

Image
Some paint chips and dents, not too bad!

Image
Wacky pick holders as seen in some photos. Beats taping them to the body, headstock or mic stand. Good thinking Marty!

Image

Image
The toggle switch is actually VERY tight to move and does not click but does work. If anyone knows what causes this and how to fix it please let me know. The coil splitters work perfectly.

All the electronics seem to work fine but the POTs need tightening.

Image

Image
Output jack is on the outside and stamped ‘’23870’’ which suggests ‘87/’88.

Image
Found this thing in the case, Schaller. If you know what it is please let me know.

Image

Image
Look at all that heavy rash on the back...AWESOME!!

Image
A couple of dents on the back on the neck...still lightning fast!!

Image
Late 80’s Carvin logo, not as big as Jason’s though!. NICE!!

Image
The finish on the Kahler flip nut is in very good, but the flips have ripped the bar/pin from the base, a common problem. The spacing nut looks to be black plastic, the nut is factory set and is set quite low...

Image
The headstock face is in a good condition not too many scrapes.

Image
I don’t know if you guys can see but on the truss rod cover it says: ‘’10-3-87 BT’’. FYI my ‘86 Carvin V220 says: ‘’1-10-86 BT’’. What does the BT stand for?

Image
The Carvin tunes are in good condition, set loose.

Image
Although an ‘87 it looks like a neck-thru not set. I could not get a pic but there are lines that do not appear on my ’86.

Left: Marty’s V220 Right: My First V220.

Next day...

Thanks for the kind words and suggestions! :)

Don’t worry guys, I am not going to tamper with it and try to cosmetically restore it. NO WAY!! All the scrapes and dents stay where they are. I am just gonna give it a little clean up and fix any broken parts ie. Kaher Nut. I want it look exactly like it did in ‘88/’89, and it isn’t far off. And I am not removing any stickers off the case, especially the Japanese one beside the Kahler, that sicker makes this guitar unique.

I actually spent all of today on the floor doing it up. My knees are fuckin' aching but it was worth it. Here is what I did and interesting things I found, more pics included:

Image

Image
I tightened up all the POTs, not sure how they became loose. But it seems the neck volume pot (closest to the bridge) has been changed to a split-shaft/bigger one. The original ones feel a lot better...

Image
I replaced the broken Khaler flip nut with a NOS 80's one I had but kept the original screws. I also stripped and oiled the Khaler because it was really corroded and some moving parts were really tight, all good now.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
I tried to use a bar on it but I think the springs are too heavy, it does not come back in tune. I will probably have to get smoother ones if I want to use the bar. Marty never used the bar since his playing style made it tough to play with one. The threaded hole is like new and has no dents and no chipped finish. I might just leave it the way it is and not have a bar. I have the ’86 V220 that can do that...

Image
I lightly dusted it and cleaned the neck and body, it’s a lot smoother now.
Now the strings...

Image
I managed to fix the toggle switch, it just needed some oil to get it going again. After all that time not being used it just seized up, but now it’s like new. Even clicks into position. Also the toggle switch is ether wired backward or fixed backward because the down position turns the bridge PU off ect. I didn’t actually check which one it was since I only noticed it after the sting change. D’oh!
I still have the PUs set up just as Marty left them.

Image
A new set of 9’s. I didn’t have to do much action or saddle spacing set up since it was set up really well anyway.

Image
I also oiled the FB w/lemon oil, it was tough to get some of the old dirt off it.
The neck is very straight since Marty kept it in a controlled environment at his lockup.

Image
The nut grooves actually look really worn, I may have to replace the nut or fix it? Some of the strings are rattling too much when I play an open sting, distortions masks it though...

Image
These pick holders actually work very well. I never seen one before, I even stuck in a CACOPHONY pick I got a few months back, apparently it belonged to Jason when he was still in Cacophony.

Image

Image
I bagged the flip nut, strings and tags and store it in the case.

Image

Image

Image
I fixed the middle latch so now it closes and even clicks! There is a little mechanical damage since I was working on it while it was still attached and my tools are limited, it takes a while to straighten out, but it came out quite nice, it works.

Image
So that’s it pretty much restored as it would have been back in ‘88/’89. It’s surprising how much work all the little things needed to get them working again, mostly because it wasn’t used for 20 something years, but now it looks, feels and sounds awesome. This guitar deserves to be played and it will be. I feel like a lucky SOB to own a piece of metal history from one of the world’s finest metal guitarists.

Thank You Marty.

No that's Marty!! :P
It's from a 1989 Carvin catalog.
Image
I am not 100% sure if it IS the one I own as in '89 Marty already had the Japanese sticker and the two pick holders on the guitar. It could be an older photo though from '88...

+1 to all of this! :P

The strap pins are Kahler strap lock pins as well. The strap lock from the case should fit on. Was there only 1 of them?

That is amazing!

I was looking forward to see that guitar getting in hands of someone who would appreciate its history and all the amazing things it did with Cacophony.

Glad it has arrived to a great fan!

Have fun, and rock it!

Stickers (on the case) say 'Itou', the other one on the gutiar is 'Satou'. They are family names.

Happy to share! :D
I just wanted lift the lid on this historic Ax and show it up close.
This guitar hasn't been seen for about 20 years and I'm sure there are a bunch of guys that seen this guitar in action in '88/ '89 and would love to see it one more time.
