Are you talking about how the guitar tone sounds a little fuzzy?

I'd like to know too.

Is it the same kind of lead tone he gets on that long song "The Jam?"

+1 that tone matched Jeff's voice when he sang stuff like: "endless times, seemless rounds" or "give myself to shine" (something like that anyway)

what did he use?

He said on his website he said for the Superheroes album he used a Laney GH100L and all the distortion came from the amp

On his site now...

You have changed your amp endorsement over the years. What made you finally decide on Marshall amps?

A: OK, a brief history of amps I have used...
1986 -1987- early RACER X - 70's Marshall 50w head w/Lee Jackson mod
1988 - Live RACER X albums - stock ADA pre-amp into Ampeg V-4 head
1989 - MR. BIG first album - Metaltronix head and Ampeg/ADA system
1991 - MR. BIG "Lean Into It" - All of the above!
1993 - MR. BIG "Bump Ahead" - Ampeg VL1002 head
1995 - MR. BIG "Hey Man" - Laney VC50 combo
1997 - 2005 Paul Gilbert Solo CDs - Laney VC50 combo or GH100L head
2006 - "Silence Followed by a Deafening Roar" Marshall Vintage Modern combo (2266C).

So it's been a long search for the best tone, starting with Marshall and ending with Marshall. Playing on the "G3" tour and making guitar instrumental records really inspired me to focus on the details of a guitar tone, and I love the feel, the sound, the look, and yes, even the smell of Marshall amps.

I think Hammer wants to know if Paul also used a pedal or significantly changed the amp tone settings to make it sound like that.

Could be any filter; Mid-ranged Wah, Auto-Wah set to max treshold or whatever, you name it.

And yes, that solo ROCKS!

Could be just an EQ with extremely high Mid-settings. :)

it's likely...but that frequency sounds too vocal. i would go with a half-cocked wah, or maybe a Q-Zone type effect.

whatever it is, i love that sound.

And the song itself has to be one of Racer X´s finest moments. Its just so "plain & simple" it rocks your ass off.

+1

I thought the same.

Btw it's a nice song to hear, and in these days I'm listening to the whole album after a few months of Superheroes' silence.
It's an awesome album!!!
