 Getting Heavier
I've tried making this thread like twice on two different occasions a while back but both times my computer f'ed up and I lost all the stuff I typed... but I just wanted to say this:
Getting Heavier is as good an album as Superheroes, Technical Difficulties, Street Lethal, and yes, even Second Heat (if not better?)
I wanted to apologize for ever putting these cds ahead of GH. I think every song is AWESOME and I actually have an easier time listening to GH all the way through than TD, Superheroes, and Street Lethal. The song writing and solos are better than they have ever been.
I just made this thread in hopes that people who were like me will dust off their GH cds and give it a few proper listens.
I think they have no boundaries in what they could do if they reformed to write some original songs again. I really hope we get to see some day...

What a coincidence! I was just listening to Catapult to Extinction about 4 days ago for the 1st time in more than a year, and while I was listening, I wondered why I deprived myself of this for so long! I think I'll listen to it again tonight!
Don't know if I agree with the Second Heat thing, though.
I mean, come on!

NOOO I gotta correct myself...
I mean IF NOT BETTER than some of the others, DEFINATELY not Second Heat <333
sorry Second Heat!!!
anyway I LOVE Catapult* To Extinction!
It's RACER X! Unlike Viking Kong and BRO (=Paul Gilbert)
You know? Scott, Juan, and Paul are ALL there. It doesn't focus only on Paul's shredding.
I love it!

Awesome.
Lucifer's Hammer is probably the only song that stood out for me when I FIRST listened to GH and it's still one of my top favorites.
I love the vocal intro. It's METAL

I have to say though, I've always loved Endless. Been partial to that one since I first heard it.

Indeed, i love Getting Heavier. Believe me, you're not alone in this. Besides, Empty Man has one of the most awesome intros i've ever heard in a song.

GH was my first Racer X cd so I have a real soft spot for it. I love ALL of the songs. Rocks, Golden, Hammer, Dr. X...G-G-Go ...all kick butt.

i will say this: Getting Heavier is a great record, with very solid song, but it is my least favorite Racer X record.
it just doesn't have the heaviness of Superheroes and it just doesn't grab me the way that Second Heat and Street Lethal did.

I used to feel the same way. And I agree it doesn't GRAB you the way the other albums do. I think you really have to love all the other cds and the band to REALLY get into Getting Heavier. Because the songs are COMPLETELY different from what Racer X was in the 80's. But today it's really hard for me to say which Racer X cd is my LEAST favorite, it makes me sick to think about making that decision. I just know that theres only a small amount of RX songs that I skip, and none of them are on GH.

If MDu didn't tab it, it doesn't exist!
Getting Heavier is a great record, full of catchy songs. I can easily see why people bash on it, it is as Eric said COMPLETELY different, but it IS still Racer X.

Endless is one of Paul's best solos by far IMO. Not only is the phrasing jaw-dropping, the way it just creeps in and goes right back into the tune seamlessly is so cool. Plus the vocals are so dynamic and just grab you.

My opinion of GH hasn't changed. Some good songs (Lucifer's Hammer, Dr. X, Bucket of Rocks, Siren's Eye, Catapult, Go-gg-Go, Golden God) but no great ones. Paul's playing is still terrifying, but the songs just don't hold up against previous Racer X records. Too much Rush/Trower influence and not enough Priest/Van Halen influence. Definitely the weakest RX CD by far and an incredible let down after Superheroes.

I think the bass mix, drum mix, sound HUGE.
Guitar could've been a little more punchy IMO. I admire how there are less guitar tracks (it's more old school), but sometimes it sacrificed their usually huge sound. I think a big part of the reason why this record doesn't sound as metal is because of the guitar tone. Again...IMO. The lead tone is fantastic though. It was the rhythm guitars that I felt needed to be beefier.
I think that even the Snowball of Doom CD sounded bigger and badder than this cd's mix.
