The best at what?

Im mean, from reading everyones posts, there are so many differant aspects to those guys Bass playing that you could never really get an ultimatum.

The question would be so much easier if it was for example, Whos the fastest. In which case i would say Billy because i think Addicted to that Rush is as good as anything Bruce and Paul done in unison.

Same here. Some of the lines John has come up with really amaze me... and he has the technique to play difficult lines. He's an incredibly solid player... really sticks to the groove and never leaves the box (unless he's doing a fill). Listen to his grooves in The Scream. When you want him to rip, he can and will.

this groove and soul must be something else than Racer X.
I know no song of Racer X instantly with this features. Maybe I sould relisten to Getting Heavier :?:

good call, I chose him for predominantly that reason too!! Plus I was never big on Billy's bass tone much.

mmm...

hard one...
but if you listen to John's solo in EV1(racer x) and Billy's solo in Live in SF(mr.big)
you'll notice that billy's technique is a mixture between guitar and bass: tapping, bendings, artificial harmonics. but they're adapted for bass so i think that billy's better than john because he is faster with his fingers(right hand) and can do more than john because he adapted techniques for another instrumen to his.

This is exactly why I like John better. He plays bass, not guitar on a bass.

So bends, harmonics, and tapping is guitar playing.... how about shredding?

if you play that kind of stuff yo're not a bassist, you're now a bassguitarist?

IMO, it's not about the techniques per se. It's about the role of a bass player in a band. The bass is a rhythm instrument. A good bass player locks in with the drummer to create a great rhythm section. Doesn't mean he can't use bends, harmonics, or tapping to do so. And depending upon the tempo of the song, shredding may be completely appropriate. The point is, bass is not a lead instrument (unless you're playing "Big Bottom" by Spinal Tap ... but I digress). I'm not saying the bass can't occassionally break out and take the spot light. And occassionally it can be cool to hear the bass player play in harmony with a fast guitar run. But if that happens too much, the rhythm is neglected and the band as a whole suffers.

But that's just me. Others may have a different opinion.

Actually, that's not far at all from my belief. Good explanation.

What the hell is "runabout"? ROUNDABOUT has a good baseline, though.
