 Re: The Laney/Marshall Thread
Ah yeah guess I should give more detail. Recorded my VC50 through a cheap mic from 3 metres away Volume at about no more than 3, Presence Max, Drive 6-7, Gain Max, Bass 4, Mid 5, Treble 4.5 or something along those lines. The thing is loud, I really want to crank the volume some day. I should get some new strings and give it another go. Gain gets much more aggressive with more Drive. This thing makes me want to play guitar more often, so I will once exams are done this season. It's definitely a hard rock amp.

 Re: The Laney/Marshall Thread
Thanks for your advice. It did sound quite good. Now, the problem is, me being a total nerd when it comes to buying material that will have a long-term relationship with me, I´ve been looking for more candidates and am getting very much into the Blackstar HT Club 40...decisions, decisions, why must it be so hard?

I do have the Ibanez Jemini, and was thinking about getting a bad monkey or some authentic tube distortion and maybe a compressor to tighten the sound.. So basically you´re saying that with a decent OD/DS pedal the VC series is overall a better choice than the LC? Very interesting. I´ve heard the VC series drive channel sounds a bit muddy, but maybe i´ll have to try one first. I've never played a VC30, so I can't say anything about its tone. But I've played a VC30 with a BOSS DS-2 and it sounded heavy as hell!

 Re: The Laney/Marshall Thread
If you had to choose between a Laney VC50 (exellent condition) and a Marshall 2266 Head, which one would you get? They both cost about 600€ , which might be too much for the Laney. But on the other hand I don't have a speker cabinet. But I can get a Framus 2x12 Box loaded with Celestion V30's for 180€. So Laney vs. Marshall... Combo vs. Head... both 50 watts... Which one would you pick? My aim is of course to get a Gilbert'ish tone. If possible like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2Z-aj0Ojyc Video description: "paul gilbert guitar solo found in the Terrifying guitar Trip DVD" (1995) (I know he wasn't using Marshll back then.) Does anybody know for sure what he was using in this clip? I'm using an Ibanez RG550XX with DiMarzio's in the Bridge (Tone Zone) and Neck (Air Norton) postion (middle: stock PU). So Humbuckers as opposed to the Fireman which has single coils... Right now I tend towards the Laney, but it would ship from UK to Austria. That's a long distance for a fragile amp... I can't decide, can someone help?

 Re: The Laney/Marshall Thread
Like I told you earlier, he was using Ampeg amps (you can find the exact one on the first page of gear thread). The video clip comes from the 1993 Bump Ahead tour I'd go for Laney simply because I hate how Marhalls sound and even though I'd prefer it to be a head than a combo, still - Can't stand a Marshall sound

 Re: The Laney/Marshall Thread
I've actually seen alot of VC50's go for around $500-$600. Mine was $650 if I remember correctly. The vintage modern is definitely going to put a bigger dent in your wallet. But as far as comparing them, they're completely different amps. Not to mention they use different tubes, speakers etc. The Marshall is a single channel while the Laney offers two.. All I can say is try them out or listen to audio of both. Personally, I prefer the Marshall.

 Re: The Laney/Marshall Thread
I tried the Marshall today... wasn't to impressed to say the least... as I expected. _NowakP wrote: Like I told you earlier, he was using Ampeg amps (you can find the exact one on the first page of gear thread). They seem to be rather rare, and tend to be unreliable (without the Lee Jackson mod <= I don't get this... wasn't Lee the one who designed this amp in the first place ) I was also wondering if the drive channel on the Laney VC/H is the same as the one channel on the GH - same for the Ampeg Models. Also what does the "L" stand for in GH50L/100L and the "R" in VH100R? I also found some with an "N" after the "L"/"R". BTW check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps_pxD3B ... re=related (read description below the video)

 Re: The Laney/Marshall Thread
Tried the GH50L today and bought it right away. Sounded good with the Marshall cab of the seller, but I decided to only buy the head because I want V30s. So unfortunatly I'll have to wait a little longer before I can play it.

 Re: The Laney/Marshall Thread
Does anyone know how I can date my VH100R? I really can't tell anything by just looking at the date in the "tested" sticker 'cause I don't know how to read it. I think it reads 1475 or 147S. The serial number is GT1331, if it helps somehow. E: And the picture, of course:

 Re: The Laney/Marshall Thread
Do any of you vintage modern owners find that it has a pretty loud operating sound? Like a fizzy kind of noise thats always there?

Any fellow JCM 800 Owners in here? I got EQ Settings to post! Ianasauras wrote: Do any of you vintage modern owners find that it has a pretty loud operating sound? Re: The Laney/Marshall Thread
Its getting sorted now.... Though its been in the shop over a month now. First the reverb didnt work, then the fx loop went and the on light never worked. Now their waiting on new tubes from Marshall apparently.

Found a fizz issue with pedals running in the loop - is that the sound you were getting at? Not sure if its broken I'm doing some research to see if that's normal. Amp appears to operate as it should, The fizz went away as soon as I took out the cables in the loop.
