Post MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrive
I was ready to throw my Laney Pro Tube head out the window because it just sounded awful to me. But everyone I would talk to just kept saying to try an overdrive pedal with it. I hang out over at harmony-central.com alot on the amp message board and everybody that had tried the Zakk pedal said it was friggin awesome. So I ordered one, got it in today and they aren't exagerrating one bit. This pedal gave my Laney the sustain and gain that it was missing. It sounds sweet now. I think once I get a hotplate where I can crank it up it will sound fucking amazing. So if you're in the market for an overdrive check one of these out. Once I get done playing with it and dial in the exact tone I'm after I'll post some clips.

I have a marshal 30th and i put the ibanez td9sx over the crunch channel.
it give me a lot of sustain, but not a Zakk Wylde distottion.
what do you think guys?
what can i try?

I cant understand why anyone would want to sound like Zak. This Rig sounds horrible to me. It just sounds far to fuzzy, you cant hear the tone of the strings. you might as well run a midi sequencer though a marshall amp you'd get the same sound.

he just has a thick sludge of wah and fuzzy distortion, to make up for his sloppy playing

I didn't buy the pedal to sound like Zakk, I bought it cuz it had awesome reviews and I was in need of an overdrive. It's like an SD-1 but better, no noise.

Guys, the pedal is a tube screamer with a bullseye. Very flexible pedal. You won't sound like Zakk with it.

Yeah, once I get some clips up you can hear it for yourself, I sound nothing like Zakk. I can go from bluesy to full out high gain lead with a spin of the knob. Unfortunately the starter on my car went out yesterday and I've been trying to get that fixed and haven't had a chance to record yet.

I have the pedal and love it and I don't sound like Zakk either and that's playing through a JCM800 2203ZW!!! :D

You may not like his tone, but he ain't sloppy. Have you heard his acoustic playing? Don't sound sloppy to me.

That's just because you are not Zakk. It's in the fingers.

I know. It was in response to those that said they didn't want to sound like Zakk. You can play through what ever you want and you'll sound like yourself. :D

Is it based on the TS-909? I thought it was simply a tweaked Distortion +, which is nowhere near a Tube Screamer, IMHO.

Yeah, it's based on TS-808 and the Boss SD-1 pedals, but seems to have less noise, doesn't lose low end, and doesn't have the midrange hump that both of those have.

Don't waste your time. He's a Zakk hater.

You, are a complete schmuck.

Here's Zakk's audition tapes for the Ozzy gig. Even at 17, he was RIPPING. You think he's sloppy, I think you're TOTALLY deaf, junior.

I've jammed with him 3 times, and every time he amazes me more and more the same way Paul does.

He's the ONLY mainstream FM radio fast guitar soloist standard bearer out there right now bringing lead guitar into the ears of 60,000 kids a night. Where are your heroes?

Ok, take a listen to this and tell me where the "thick sludge of wah and fuzzy distortion" is that he is using to hide his "sloppy playing".

He's got Zakk confused with Kirk Hammett, perhaps? :D
