For hating Nirvana? I just thought it was lame. These shitty "grunge" tones and boring powerchord riffs. To be fair I've never heard Cobain solo, but I'm pretty sure he's weak, at best. And the whole "fuck you" attitude, I just never got that, it's the same with punk, thrash, death, black, new wave of American Heavy Metal etc. I'm sitting there listening to this horrible, visceral "music" and I'm thinking, "Why are you all so pissed off? ... Lighten up! Always look on the bright side of life etc. etc."

I think with some of it you're right but I just like the whole simplicity of it... I listen to people like G'n'R, Velvet Revolver, UFO etc. and think that sometimes their music is too complicated (for want of a better word) even though I do love their music. So sometimes it's nice to put on some simple music but that's my tastes and I don't blame people with different tastes. I can see why people may not like Nirvana in the same way I can see why people like Keane but that's their choice and I don't mind as long as they don't attack my tastes....

You go ahead like what you want to like, Oodles! My wife makes fun of me for liking Abba, but I still listen to 'em. (Did I just say that outloud?)

Joe Satriani
Buckethead
Paul Gilbert
Michael Hedges
James Hetfield

about Vai: I think people don't recognize his speed because he doesn't really do the classic alternate-picking and sweeping stuff...more legato kind of things, and lots of tapping.

about Petrucci: over-rated boooooo ... he is the Kenny G of shredders

I totally agree that John Petrucci is very over rated. Don't get me wrong, I think he is very good, and deffinately has his moments ("Lie") but I think that he is the most boring Shredder out there. Nothing but Alternate Picking with maybe a Sweep here or there is just a waste of time.
I just think no one ever taught him how to use different Phrasing and Articulations in one Solo.

I have a pretty wide range of influences, i don't know if i can put them in order but here's my main five in no particular order:

Paul Gilbert
Frank Zappa
John Petrucci
Joe Satriani
Bradley Nowell

Many people would probably disagree or at least be suprised by the last choice but i seriously admire the guy. Closely followed by Steve Vai, Jimmy Page and i'm just getting into Steve Lukather. John McLaughlin is also awesome.

You rule! I'd seen loadsa Nuno Bettencourt lessons and some video footage was beginning to really like the guy but i couldn't remember what the band was called. Thats the problem i get into alot of players through guitar mags and so don't always hear of their bands.

I saw a pretty cool quote on Nuno from George Lynch:

"I think my favourite guitarist all-round has to be Nuno Bettencourt. He's definitely the one to watch out for because he's hungry and uncontrived - In fact he pisses me off!"

By the way can anyone give me the name of the bands for these guitarists because i'm not sure Lukather (I think its Toto but not sure, and is there any others?), Becker, Freidman

Cheers guys

riff master? that's a bit of an exageration don't you think? let's try Tony Iommi or James Hetfield for that description.
