I know he went to GIT for one year, but most of his playing (just for not saying ALL) was selftaught.
Get his vids and start hitting the strings!

That's indeed some good advice. Just play man. Whatever you feel like. Cause when you try to imitate somebody, and it doesn't work out, you'll just end up feeling down. It's cool of course if you can play some Paul Gilbert, but it's even cooler when you play your own stuff.

The best tip that I have ever learned about and practiced constantly is:

Play with your ears!

It's one thing to master scales, but to be able to determine what notes you want to play, and creating the music in real life that you hear in your head is the true art of guitar playing.

If you ever have a tune in your head, humm it, if you can humm it, you can figure it out on the guitar in time (will take time if your new, but be patient), then get it up to speed (always start slow if your learning something new), then rock out.

I know Paul probly does this as I know Yngwie, Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Vai, Satch...they all say this...and its true.. play with your ears!

That's Patty Patterson, Paul's ex-wife. I don't know the reason behind the break-up though.
She's the one he sings about in the b-side "Family" (after Brandon Roo and Chowderbone of course!!)
