Post shawn lane has passed away today
I regret to inform everyone that one of if not the greatest guitarist ever shawn lane has died sept 26th at the age of 40.Having known Shawn and being friends w/ him since 95',I was hit by the news very hard. Ya never know when the last time you are gonna see or talk to somebody is the last time. Let's all pray for Shawn and his entire family. He has influenced the modern wave of shred having influenced myself as well as countless others like Bruce and Paul as well. he will truly be missed R.I.P

That sucks!

Shawn Lane was a class player and way too young to die!

Without wishing to be insensitive does anybody know how he died?

Well, I just checked his forum, and according to his daughter, Ashe, he was suffering from lung disease. Not sure if it was smoking related or what.

I'm very sad to hear this news, as I thought Shawn was a real talent and own most of his releases. I've been trying to track down his REH vids for a while now and this just makes me want to look ever harder.

RIP, Shawn. We're gonna miss you.

Regards,
Jeff

Just unbelievable.

During the days I was around Bruce, I can remember how highly Bruce and Paul looked up to Shawn. Mike Varney (Shrapnel label) used to share new talents around with his signed guitar players, and when Varney heard of Shawn, Bruce and Paul knew of him right away. To this day, I still have this live performance video of Shawn Lane playing live somewhere midwest, probaby in Memphis. It probably made it's way from Shawn to Varney to Bruce to me, copy after copy.

At the time when all the local L.A. shredders idolized Bruce and Paul, they idolized Shawn.

Here's an Email I just received from Paul..........

Hi Sean,

Man, 40 is too young to go.

I'm glad I got to know him a little bit. He was a huge fan of music, movies, and art. We would have such a good time just sitting around listening to records. I felt like we were two 8-year-old kids hanging out. It reminded me of the time before I started playing guitar, when I was just a music FAN. We hardly ever picked up guitars. We just liked to LISTEN.

Paul

I remember Bruce telling stories about Shawn that were funny. Bummer...R.I.P

I'd heard that he had some health problems. It's a tragic loss.

That really sucks, and I turn 40 next month! When I was in LA in '87 my friend that was taking lessons from Bruce told me about Shawn, apparently he was one of the few that Paul and Bruce were amazed by.

lix -- thanks, man. I haven't heard about Shawn Lane before he died. I haven't heard his music yet either, but what actually blew my mind -- is when i was looking through credits section for "Powers Of Ten" in his discography, Shawn Lane was credited for EVERYTHING on that album, including guitar, bass, keyboards and even drums perfomance! That guy must have been a true genius... think i have to listen to his music as soon as i'll have a chance...

Yep he was a man of many musical talents. I snagged one of his REH instructional vids the other day and it is just mind-numbingly unreal! Makes me want to burn all my guitars and pickup the kazoo instead. :)

Incidentally, there is also a re-release of "Power Of Ten" that came out a few years after the original release that features a live drummer as opposed to a drum machine. I don't happen to think that the drum machine on the original sounds bad at all, but if stuff like that bugs you, look for the other version.

Shawn is most well-known for his work with Jonas Hellborg. He released about 3 or 4 different cd's with Jonas and they are all pretty amazing. Make sure to check out the last one, "Personae", as it is truly awesome.

Regs,
Jeff
