Post Top 5 Favorite Guitar Tones
We all have a reason why our guitar faves are our faves, and tone is a huge component of that. So what are some of your favorite guitar tones at this moment in time? Some of us are plug and play guys, and some of us are complete gear freaks...which one are you? Will your favorite tones reflect this? We shall see!

In no particular order

Andy Timmons
Allen Hinds
Oz Noy
Mike Moreno
Robben Ford's late 70's early 80's, and his tone on the song Oasis.

I'm totally a gear freak and my favorite guitar tones reflect that, with the exception of Django Reinhardt but that's just because I love the tone of gypsy jazz guitar. Anyway here goes (in no particular order):

David Gilmour (okay...this one actually is number one for me...the rest are in no particular order)
John Mayer
George Harrison
Django Reinhardt
Matt Bellamy

I'm not sure if I have favourite guitar tones. But I'll try ranking the 5 ones I like the most:

Joe Bonamassa
George Harrison
Paul Gilbert (Technical Difficulties until Burning Organ era)
Guthrie Govan
Chuck Schuldiner

Obviously they're all different, and I like them for different reasons. I guess those are my favourites in their style.s

Obviously Gilmour is #1. In particular the "Comfortably Numb" solos, both of 'em are perfect. Can't choose just one.

The other 4 are in no particular order.

This guy's tones (clean, OD, and OD w/wah) are ridiculous. He posted this over at TGP and I've been drooling over that sound.

Eric Johnson's clean chorusey Strat sound is great.

For higher gain hard rock/metal rhythm stuff it's hard to beat Paul's sound on Superheroes. Just a monstrous guitar sound on that whole album.

Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs" univibe sound. It's so electric sounding as if the strings themselves were plugged into a wall socket and Robin was releasing completing the circuit each time he touched a fret.

I'm sure I'm omitting some great others as well. Hard to pick just 5.

It may sound blasphemous but i don't think I like Hendo's tones very much. I've listened to old Tribal tech stuff and some of the more recent trio stuff and he seems to mostly play with a very "twangy" thin sounding signal.

There are specific exceptions of course I meant generally.

Lots of monster players over the years, some who are my favorites but who I think had bad tone much of the time.

In my opinion:
Randy Rhoads' tone sucked.
Buddy Guy's tone usually sucks.
Duane Allman. Holy crap it was like sticking needles into my brain sometimes.
etc.

Of course it's all subjective. What might sound harsh to me could sound great to you.

No particular order here.

Govan
Krasno
Howe
Gilbert's RX metal tone in TD/SH/GH
Eklundh

You know, this list could probably change on any given day. The first three somewhat clean/smooth, the latter two are heavier.

Edit: Just realised the latter two may just be down to the dirty channel on a Laney.

He was very close to being on my list...

But then I thought about how Scott just uses everything Mike Landau does. :P. Scott could make a Fender Frontman sound like 1000 bucks though. I've seen it!

Some more amazing tones:

Richie Kotzen has really amazing tone nowadays.
Steve Vai's when he was using Bogners in the early 90's was amazing.
Allan Holdsworth pretty much inspired all fusion guitar players with his atmospheric clean tone.
Jamie Kime of Zappa plays Zappa.
Mike Landau, cause.
And....Scott Henderson's tone in the mid 90's to present time.

Considering it's all personal opinion I don't know why anyone would expect other people to like someone in particular. :)

I don't like John Petrucci's tone so much to post it in here and I consider Jeff Loomis' to be just a generic shred tone.
