Post Ibanez Les Paul
I've always liked the way the Gibson Les Paul sounded, and it's been a bit of a dream guitar to have (typical for a rock guitarist, I guess).

Problem is, they're a bit too expensive to me, and I've been looking through Ebay, and there's several Ibanez Les Pauls for like, 500 bucks.

I think they look great, but I wanted to know, from whoever owns or have played one, if they're as good as Gibson Les Pauls. How's the tone, playability and sustain compared to a Gibson?

Thanks!

Matt

I have a PF200 (the bolt neck version of the LP-esque guitar Bruce played in the G3 tour) and it's a pretty good guitar as is. The stock pickups were very microphonic and the stock "star" tuners were pretty weak, but after changing those out it's become pretty great- and oddly enough it's a big hit whenever I bring it out at shows. Low, flat frets like certain Les Pauls, nice tone, etc.

I had a lawsuit era Ibanez Les Paul Custom pre-serial # which puts it around 1974? I think.
It was a very comfortable guitar and looked great but in truth the quality just wasn't there. It didn't look like a cheap knock-off, but it played like one. I finally sold it a few years ago.

But then I've talked to people who love theirs. I think it's just a matter of inconsistency for those old ones. Some were good some were bad. I wouldn't buy one unless I played it first.

Epiphone Les Pauls might be a great alternative, Sir Robin..... They're nearly identical to Gibsons, but for a fraction of the price.
That is, if you can't find the Ibanez you're looking for, something to think about.

Yeah, but on a consumer's point of view, I'd rather have an Ibanez Les Paul than an Epiphone Les Paul... I think it's... more of a "I've got this cool guitar very few people know about" as opposed to "hey, I couldn't buy a Gibson, but I got an Epiphone instead".

I know it's silly, but hey, that's just me.

If you are already looking for used guitars and want a guitar many people don't know about there are other options. There is Orville and Orville by Gibson. They are a cut above epiphone. They are basically Gibsons made in Japan, and they even have the gibson style headstock. I don't know how easy it would be to find one in Brazil but they do come up pretty regularly on ebay.

And not all Epiphones are cheap imitations of Gibsons. Most of the solid bodies are, but they do have some hollow bodies that are pretty nice.

As far as vintage Ibanez models go it will depend on the model. Many of the Ibanez models had bolt on necks. If you want to get as close to a Les Paul as possible find a model with a set neck.

And a lefty one. If I could afford it I´d go for it

I've heard great things about the Agile 3100 Les Paul model.
People rave about 'em and they're very affordable. It might be worth checking one out if you can, unless of course you really want the Ibanez name on your guitar.

(and yes, my '74 Ibanez had a bolt-on neck)

Yeah, I know about that. There are some hollow bodies and acoustic models which are very cool.

About the Orville, that's great info. I didn't know about them as well. Also, I'm going to the US in December, so my range of options is wider. Of course I woudn't buy a guitar without playing it, unless I actuallt know it's a great guitar.

I'm not sure if I should get another electric guitar though... I'm definitely up for a steel string acoustic, and maybe a cheapo bass. Let's see whatever is cheaper/ has the most advantages in buying.

My buddy Adam from school was a MONSTER player and played an Ibanez Lawsuit les paul (could send you a video or two if you want to see it in action). His was set up amazing. I bet it's up to luck to get a good one though...

I've played on a buddy's Ibanez Paul on several occasions, even borrowed it for a gig once, and I insist it was the best playing, worst sounding guitar I'd ever played.

I have a pf200. It sounds killer! The super 80s have a nice cut to them. The star tuners on mine are really stable. The nut however is awful so I need to replace that. it certainly has some nice features with the Quick Change bridge and block inlays/gold hardware... and the best part is, I got it really cheap for $250 w/ case on fleecebay. I turned around and sold my Epi Les Paul for $400 and have been happy ever since.

i'd love to have a lawsuit Ibby LP but like others have said, they can be hit or miss with the ones I have played. They definitely look the part though. Take a second look at the PF line. Bruce Bouillet and sometimes PG rock a PF300 and occasionally can be found cheap and they have a lot of the Les Paul features but its still its own guitar.

I actually like the PF300s more than the lawsuit models!

I feel in love with a dark green one Paul plays on the GOOMY instructional!

So,

what's the difference between the PF200 and PF 300?

From looking at an old catalog the 300 is set neck. the 200 is bolt on. Also the 300 has a little 3 way switch so you can have the neck pickup work as a humbucker, single coil, or out of phase pickup.

Here's a video of Adam shredding the shit out of his Ibanez LP. He is absolutely ridiculous... Hopefully if you sign onto facebook you can see this...By the way, I'm only filming the video...I'm not playing anything. By the way, he's using a shitty solid state fender, with no drive at all. Completely clean. Gives you an idea how fucking nice his guitar is set up plus the strength of his fingers.
