Post Muting Question
Just a quick question about muting unwanted string noise. Throughout my entire time playing guitar, when it came to palm muting I would only use the flesh on the left side of my picking hand; meaning the flesh beneath the thumb would not brush the strings while playing. However, I'm still noticing that I'm getting unwanted string noise, so I decided to rest my full palm on the strings and so far it seems to be working.

I'd just like to know if anyone else here uses the same approach. Just out of curiosity.

Post Re: Muting Question
Do you mean palm muting to create that chugga chugaa rhythm-type sound or do you mean palm muting as in getting rid of unwanted noise by applying slight pressure to the unused strings?

For the former I suppose I just use that area from the base of my pinky to the wrist.
For the latter is tend to use more of the right hand including the meat under the thumb depending on what's being played and a good deal of the noise reduction also comes from the left hand by lightly dampening the unused strings (without creating harmonics.)

Think of the sliding octave type licks as an example. Something like:

Your left hand is muting the 4th string (open D) the whole time. That same principal is incorporated into a great deal of the rest of my playing no matter what technique is being used.

Post Re: Muting Question
When it comes to fast playing, I usually keep my fingers on the left hand pretty flat against the strings so I mute all the higher ones. And I use my right hand to mute the strings lower to the one I'm playing. Hope this makes sense, I'm still asleep :D
