Post How to improve my picking....
I have been working on the alternate picking thing for several hours a day for a couple years now and just do not feel like I am improving. I must be doing something wrong. Here are two fairly recent videos of my playing that have some 'fast' picking stuff in them. What can I do to fix or better my playing? What or how can I practice to improve?

My routine consists of single string picking(16ths and sextuplets)at various tempos, the Paul Gilbert lick at various tempos, sequences and scales, and some various exercises(steve morse stuff, licks from songs like Trilogy Suite, Sacrified, Technical difficulties). I just wanna know what I can do make my practice more effective and get results...Thanks guys!!!

Do something else. Seriously. Just doing the same thing all the time will halt your improvement. Practise sweeping, tapping, legato, anything, and your picking will actually improve. I didnt believe it until i did it myself, but it works.

I think you're coming along nicely, I'm only 17 so I don't have many words of wisdom or any bits of advice for that matter so that technically means my opinion is close to shit. But hey I don't go by that. Some nice licks going and I improved on my picking phenomally after I started listening to Paul, Basically covering his songs and picking out pieces and just practicing they become little routines and eventually evolve into new licks that you like, so it's not all boring and what not.

I used to do this, 3/4 hours a day on the same picking licks over and over and I improved about 5bpm every now and then. I would improve about 30bmp on the 16th note picking stuff if I just took a massive 2 month break from practising or so, just jamming out songs whenever and when you go back to practice, your old speeds will seem easy.

I really don't understand why or how, but it works.

Here is a new video. What should I improve on or do differently. WHat should I add to my regime?
