Post Alternate Picking ( I think you might want to look at this)
haha sorry for the big into but.....

...

well i can finally pick fast using the wrist and my promblem was

BEING TENSE !!!!!!!!!!!! all my life i hear people say o yeah i play as hard as
I can and you see SRV raking the crap out of the strings
and people playing with such ... force! I now relize I am very lucky
because by the looks of it i could have damaged alot if i did not change this.
when i would play before i would tense up so bad that my shoulder blade in my back would pop out and it would hurt really bad if we played a 4 hour night.
i used to lock my wrist and use my elbow for fast stuff it worked but it wasnt what i wanted.

so remeber JUST RELAX haha

Video coming soon !

I have always seemed to have a problem with my arm tensing up no matter how much I practiced. I think some people just have different muscles and different limitations.

But has anyone noticed that John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Zakk Wylde, George Lynch, and many other fast pickers are weight lifters and have big arms? I'm guessing that helps certain people with picking.

I think guys like Gilbert and Malmsteen are exceptions that are just born with the right muscle DNA that allows them to pick fast no matter what.

I don't think that the bigger the muscles are the faster you play.
It's all about fast twitch muscles.. the faster they are, the faster you play. And your muscles don't look big.
I also think that the bigger the muscles are, the more entrophized are. And that's not good for the guitar, because they are 'harder' to move and more solid, static.

It's like jumping. Look at those NBA basketball players, they haven't BIG legs, but almost all of them can jump more than 3'.
There are specific exercises called 'plyometrics' which help to jump faster and higher.
Plyometrics for wrist and fingers would allow to play faster..

yeah the relax thing takes work ! its hard to relax hahaha
it allmost feels like if your going to play somthing its like your to flemsy to play it but from some reason it works :S when i hold the pick i have to focus on just using the fingers to grip the pick ! that was my problem it wasnt nothing like my fingers couldnt move or i didnt know the patterns it was just simply being relaxed .... people dont stress that enough i dont think haha and the wrist is where its at ... you could pratice all day long and not get fast if you dont relax im tellin ya !!!!!!1

You should make a video explaining and showing your picking before and after. It'd be really helpful!

That's EXACTLY how I am man. For MANY years, I made adjustments, tried different practicing techniques, and I just wasn't making any progress. I would sit down for several hours a day working on alternate picking. What's more frustrating is that the people who don't have any trouble with it can't relate to it.
