Post ALternate Picking Trouble
So I`ve been playing for almos 5 years now, and I never really had any problem with any specific technique(except for sweeping).

I was goofing around with some guitar mags, and I read a very simple alternate picking exercise, 3 note per string...

I`m like, this is easy PG stuff I play all day....but then....I REALISED!!!
Whenever I play a 3 note per string lick or run, I don`t alternate picking when I change the string Im` playing! I felt really dumb, and I tried doing it properlly, but I just cannot go s fast as I go with my "3 note alternate picking" !!!

Has anyone here had this type of problem?

Should I practice the licks properly?

Should I quit playing guitar? :? :x

how many notes do u pick per string?
often times i only pick the first but for practice i pick each note.
i guess make sure u have a comfortable pick and string guage to get the most out of your alternate picking.

I pick every note

for example, in a situation like this

-----------------------------------------E
-----------------------------------------B
-----------------------------------------G
-----------------------------------------D
--------------3--5--7-----------------------A
----3--5--7---------------------------------E

I go down, up down (on E string) then DOWN UP DOWN again!(on the A string)....and so forth....

oh i understand now. thats very limiting to speed im guessing?
i guess u could practice the classic paul gilbert lick with 3 notes on say the E string and one on the A string. that helped greatly when i started alternate picking scales.

What you're talking about is similar to economy picking.

Get yourself a metronome and go with what Scarified909 said.

mannnnnn...othing wrong with economy picking either though man...its best if you could be good at both though.

I'm just saying this cause one of my best friends and by far the fastest guitar player i know does primarily economy picking for most of the stuff he plays.

I agree with the aforementioned, just practice some of those examples if you want to get faster.

Just practice and learn to do the things you can't. Econ picking wasn't bad either.

I went into a major picking overhaul last year when i re-learnt how to pick (5 years) and I'm perfectly comfortable with my changed picking style too. My alternate picking has also gotten much much better as a result.

hey i noticed that the same thing was really limiting my speed and accuracy, i had been playing for about 2 years before i decided to learn to strictly alternate pick.

no lie: at first its going to suck, you're going to feel like you're starting over from scratch.

but after even just a couple of days of slow slow practice, it'll start to feel natural.

there are still plenty of occasions where i dont strictly alt pick, but ive found you definitely get more speed and more control at the same time. ihmo.

I got a pal thats been playing for 20 years or so and he uses economy picking like you do. He cant alternate pick AT ALL. So he kind of "sweeps" everything he plays. He can play all the PG scales and stuff, but he playes them slightly differently to adapt them to his picking style.

I guess you got to find what works best for you. If you like to economy-picking thats okay too if you know what i mean. It might be whats best suited for you, but who knows, maybe you can just switch like refried bean. But if you cant, then dont beat yourself up. Economy picking can be just as fast! Just different.

Well, It's not like it's limmiting my speed at all (I think)... I just get tired faster than I would if I alternate pick, cuz I repeat the same moves over and over again...

It's good to know that some people do this "economic picking" that I have never heard of!
I don't really want to change my piking style, cuz I've done that once, as I would use my arm to pick, and now I use the hand(kindda like PG) and I don't have much time to re-learn guitar(studies)

The thing find interesting, is that with the econ picking I use, I can play more "rythm-like" leads....the alternate picking gives me a "flowing" type of sound, that is cool too. Now I understand why I could never play that scale at the end of Technical Difficulties and sound like Paul, even tough I could play it that fast...

so....no, I'm not quiting guitar :P

I had the same problem about 6 months ago and here is how I did to switch from economy picking to strict alternate picking: practice the 3 notes per string scale with strict alternate picking *very* slowly by making huge but regular moves with the wrist. Whenever i felt comfortable, I'd reduce the amplitude of the movements and increase the speed a little bit. Making big moves while practicing this at first was important for me because it gave me a strong regularity and it became an automatism. That wasn't such a long work actually, but pretty boring. If you decide to give alternate picking a try, I suggest you do the same.

True enough, but those two words could equally be:

Derryl Gabel (who thought this was how one was supposed to pick)

Or any of a large number of awesome Django-style gypsy guitarists. I've seen starting each string with a downstroke referred to as "gypsy picking".

Dude, for some reason, I SUCK at sweeping...I don`t know....I just don`t like the way I angle my pick when I play it fast, so I try to angle it almost parallel to the string, altough it`s not that fast....

I TOUGHT I was good at sweep pinckin.....now I`m good at.... The Brazillian Thunder Picking Style :P

just play in whatever style feels better to you... there are great alternate pickers out there (Gilbert, Petrucci etc.), and great
economy pickers (Malmsteen, Gambale, Friedman, Jeff Loomis, Kiko Loureiro, etc.)... just go for what feels best for You.. music should be fun and not stressing yourself on how to pick! I don't think the economy-pickers I mentioned before did think about that stuff so much... just have a close look to Yngwie, he even mixes a lot of scalar runs with legato! (the same as Paul Gilbert does, too!).
So go with whatever feels best to you..
