Post Considering downgrading?
Hey chaps

Just had a thought run through my head.

I was cleaning up my bedroom and getting rid of everything i don't need and was thinking to myself.....I'm kind of silly to have a £1000 100w amp considering I only play in my bedroom and most probably will never be in a band again.

Surely I'd be better off selling it and getting something like this?

http://www.blackstaramps.co.uk/products ... t-20h.html

I think it's worth me keeping my Orange 2x12 as it's a great cab but maybe I should sell the head?

Thoughts!?

if you know you're never going to use the amp at full potential, i dont see the point either

my hellcat is 35 watts, and i cant even use that at home at satisfying tube crunch levels

id definitely say downgrade man, but think of it as an upgrade, youl be able to start pushing the amp, so you'l sound better

But with an orange cab it would be a shame to not get an orange dual terror

Thanks Levi but I'm really not a fan of Orange voicing, initially I thought I was but it's way too dark sounding for me!

I've played on my friends HT-5 and a series one amp from the blackstar range and I love the voicing, but maybe I'd like a bit more gain, I'm not sure if the hT20 has more gain on tap than the HT 5?

How young are you? I am 42 and play live every week! Never say never.
Keep it in case I say.

Think I'll go try out a HT20 soon and see how I like it. Seems ridiculous to have a 100w amp!

For point of reference, my HT-5 is extremely loud. I really don't think you need anything more powerful than a HT-5

The Marshall sounds great for leads, exactly what I'm after. The cleans are good but the crunch is pretty crap.

Nitefly apparently the HT20 has a significant amount of more gain than the HT5, and I did find the HT5 to be somewhat lacking in that department!

Really? I think it has oodles of gain - I never max it out. I have gain at about 40% for stuff such as RATM. If you want something uber-metal sounding it might be good to go for a pedal to supplement your sound.

Just try them out and see what you think. I personally thought the difference between the HT-5 combo and mini-stack was negligible and not worth paying more for the stack.

Even with a 5 watts tube amp I reach an high volume before the amp starts to work great, so in my opinion even with the amp you linked you would have some volume problems.
Why don't you buy a THD Hot-Plate or something similar?

20 watts is still blow your head off loud. I believe 20w is ~65% as loud as 100w.

I'm not sure if you've tried this, but if not, you might put an EQ pedal in the loop and see if you can make the amp sound better to your ears. Attenuator will help too.

i should probably say i play a lot louder than most bedroom players

Plus no reverb on the HT5 makes me sad :( (a decent pedal would be around £150)

You guys think £630 is a fair asking price for a mint 2.5 year old JVM?

They retail at £930

Ok guys, it's on the bay!

I intend on buying a cheaper lower watt amp to replace it and use the leftover cash on a 40" TV for my room :D

Dude, don't sell the JVM!!!!!!! I played through one of those the other day, the lead channel was awesome...

In my opinion, you almost always regret selling gear (especially if you are downgrading). I know with a 100w amp, you can't push the tubes cause you would destroy your neighborhood, but you can't give up your Marshall. The comparison is like having a Ferrari and downgrading to Honda because you can rev it more... Personally I'd rather sell a liver than my Marshall!!!!

Whilst the lead channel is admittedly amazing, I feel it's excessive to have a £950 amp that never goes above 2! Saying that the crunch channel on the JVM is pretty dire

Not enough gain?

The gain pegged on my HT-5 is actually TOO much most of the time, even for 2 handed tapping stuff. I really do love the sound of it pegged too, as opposed with with a crappy distortion pedal doing all the work.
