 Re: My Custom Ibanez Epiphone
Everything's back on track now! So I spayed the body yesterday and the day before and also rubbed it down with really fine paper. Toady I sprayed it with Lacquer to seal the paint, there is some running but I will spend some time flattening it off so I can add a few more coats. Considering this is my first time ''Professionally'' finishing a guitar, I am very happy and nothing went wrong so far, knock on wood!

 Re: My Custom Ibanez Epiphone
Thank you so much guys! I was really was not sure how well would the paint come out, this is the HARDEST and most TIME CONSUMING thing I have ever done to this guitar! But if you take your time it pays off in the end! The lacquer is touch dry and I have taken it inside the house so it dries off a bit more before I start to flatten it off. It's really Shiny!

 Re: My Custom Ibanez Epiphone
You realize you're supposed to wait 1-2 months for it to cure since the lacquer will still be soft then sand down the clear coat and buff it right? I just finished painting one of my own, i can post pics if you want.

I know you have to wait 1-2 months for it to cure before putting any hardware on...but I thought that's only when you finished lacquering it... So am I suppose to wait 1 month before I rub this coat down? And yeah, lets see your pics!

 Re: My Custom Ibanez Epiphone
Ya man thats what i thought too when i heard you had to sand the clear coats but its necessary if you want you're finish to be perfectly smooth like looking into a mirror smooth lol. If not you'll probably end up with orange peel finish. I'll post my pics and you can see the difference.

Nice, Like the finish! I am also making an EVH project, the 2007 Frankenstein Replica, it needs some more work I'll be sure to post pics when it's done! Check this page: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=12288&start=440

cosmitron wrote: It's been years I haven't been there. This Is So GOOD. Thanks cosmitron! I am having a few issues with finishing it [paining part] but as soon as I resolve it I will be resuming it! Thanks again for the info! Little Update: Don't worry folks the EPI is not canceled, as a matter of fact there is some progress, I have actually found a place that can do the RACER-X Logo for me on proper vinyl and laminated! I was sent a sample and it's the shit! Should have it with in the next few weeks, hopefully! And I may have found a place that can mix custom acrylic paint, I haven't had the time to contact them yet...been really busy but I will write to then with in the next few days. I really hope they can do it... Oh and here are some photos of the RACER-X Logo prototype, it's printed on office paper and stuck with Blu-Tack! But it gives you an idea at least! Here's the original: (color seems to differ on all pics...)

How did you manage to route the channel from one cavity to another?

Long Drill, but I went from the Pot cavity to H cavity to mH cavity to Switch cavity, there is no way of going from the Switch cavity to the Pot cavity without drilling through the horn's side, but I don't want to do that...

 Re: My Custom Ibanez Epiphone
Some good news...with a little help I managed to get a hold of some Pink paint based on a code. I haven't had the time to spay it on to some wood to see how it looks but I will do it this weekend. Good thing is it's in a 400ml spray can, so no need to fuck about with a srpay gun and mixing ratios. It looks very close if not the same as the Pink paint I picked out from the Dulux paint range. But this one is Cellulose... I've heard some bad things about it...Before I go ahead with it, what do you guys think about using Cellulose Paint to finish guitars? I will also be using 2K Clear Lacquer (like epoxy dries, dries ''rock hard'' in like 2 days) over the Pink.

 Re: My Custom Ibanez Epiphone
Cellulose Paint works real great to finish guitars, known some people who used it and the guitars turned out great! I'm pretty sure they are like car paint. correct me if i'm wrong.

Lady Killer wrote: But this one is Cellulose... I've heard some bad things about it...Before I go ahead with it, what do you guys think about using Cellulose Paint to finish guitars? When you say "cellulose" I'm assuming you are referring to nitrocellulose lacquer. Nitrocellulose is considered the ideal finish for guitars, it has a beautiful crisp shine, and is pretty much the best when it comes to preserving it’s sound (because nitro is a thinner lacquer, it allows the wood to breathe and age). As it ages, nitrocellulose lacquer hardens, that hardening is part of what gives old guitars that "vintage tone". It's what Gibson uses on their guitars (and what Fender used to use years ago, although they have brought back nitro finshes on some of their road worn guitars, and some of their custom models). However nitrocellulose lacquer yellows over the years with age, and even quicker if exposed to direct sunlight, smokey bars, etc for prolonged periods of time (Gibson even includes documentation with their guitars warning vendors to not display Gibson guitars in direct sunlight because of the fact that sunlight will cause the nitro finish to yellow prematurely). So for tonal quality, using a nitro finish is the way to go. However if you are going for an accurate reproduction, odds are the original had a polyurethane finish since that is what Ibanez mostly uses for their guitars. It’s an inexpensive alternative which doesn’t yellow like nitro does, however sound-wise it’s not as good. A polyurethane finish basically encases the guitar in a plastic shell.
