This bothered me for awhile too. I repeat it as the following:

----10----------------10----- repeat

Down (9), Down (10), Down (9), Up (12), Pull off (12-9), Up (10)

This means I outside pick the first note of the sequence when I repeat it. It might not seem the easiest thing to do, but if you are sweeping across 5 strings for example, like this:

I think it's much easier to keep rhythm with the outside picking. Then again, I'm absolutely crap.

EDIT - Actually, I only do the outside picking for bigger sweeps, not for the three string ones.

so i found out jason becker goes:

down, down, down, up (pull-off), up, down on G, repeat.

that's good enough for me!

So on to the second philosophical question:

Noise suppressors: cheating or not?

Nope. Then compressors = cheating as well.

Eh. There is no point in grading difficulty. A performance wouldn't be of less value if something was done to make things easier. Lemme quote someone by saying: The aesthetic value of music does not derive from the difficulty involved in creating/playing it.

Meaning, yeah, I like the music of DragonForce. If they could play their songs live I'd watch them, even with a dampener ala-Jennifer Batten. Otherwise, I'd just listen to their mp3s.

It seems student and master agree to differ on this:

I've dug out some Shaun Baxter stuff and discovered that that's where I got my

from. No surprise there, as Baxter is an real evangelist of true economy picking.

But his student, Martin Goulding, does it the other way! (As does Guthrie, FWIW, though he's off on a whole "I don't sweep" flounce at the moment... )

Ah well, I'm practising both for the moment, the version with the downstroke on the lowest note currently seems a little easier.
