Only the copyright owner - like the publisher or the person who owns the rights to the material - can get the stuff removed.

By "copyright owner" you mean "only litigious RIAA labels" are allowed to issue DMCA take-down notices. They bought that law after all, only makes sense that they should be the only ones that are allowed to use it (when they're not filing lawsuits against dead people and 10 year old kids). Democracy in action!

Paul is a pretty reasonable and mellow person and I'd I'm sure he can see the benefit Youtube has given his career over the last few years.

I use to feel it was basically fair game too when people were posting clips and Youtube videos were all pretty low quality compared to what you'd get in a DVD, so there was still a lot of incentive to buy the material anyway. Based on the youtube quality clips I saw I bought the GOOMY and Intense Rock instructional DVDs and I liked them so much I bought the SFBADR DVD too.

Now we have people posting full-length HQ quality rips of entire DVDs though, which is a little different, but at the same time if they were all taken down I would probably never be able to watch Guitars from Mars and other rare material like that. Like I said in my earlier post, I like to post comments on those videos to encourage people to buy the DVDs if they enjoyed it.

The bottom line is no matter how hard you try to fight it computers are copying machines and they will be used for copying, you can't fight it, you can't avoid it, and you can't delay it. Wise musicians (like Paul) will embrace the benefits of it and focus on selling live experiences that can't be copied; Paul has been focusing far more recently on touring with live shows and clinics than recording and selling new material and that's probably the reason why. I'd really like to hear exactly what Paul thinks about it though.

PS. Dino! Where's my orange PGM pics?

You bring up a lot of very interesting points.

> Wise musicians (like Paul) will embrace the benefits of it and focus on selling live experiences that can't be copied

That is quite true.

I am sure Paul is very wise, and very shrewd.

Another thing to bring up is "diversity of income streams". Wise, established musicians today have multiple revenue avenues. This is discussed extensively on Harmony Central and other places. So I won't bother re-typing stuff people over there have said.

You cannot bottle up the essence of a live show fully in a video, or the essence of a clinic / teaching session in an audio recording. You can get close, but fans without a lot of prior concert experience won't be able to fill in those blanks, either emotionally or imaginatively. You can't capture the sparkle in someone's eye, or the depth of their breathing. You can get very, very close with pictures... but seeing that sort of thing "live, in person" is still worlds different.

> Paul has been focusing far more recently on touring with live shows and clinics than recording and selling new material and that's probably the reason why. I'd really like to hear exactly what Paul thinks about it though.

Paul has said many times, "thank you, YouTube."

It seems like he's focused more on touring, but he's put out 2 full-length albums in 2008 + one in 2006. Plus very numerous comp. appearances and 2 full-length DVD's. In 2009, Mr. Big released that double live DVD, and Paul + Freddie released those 4 live albums. There may have been some recording on-the-sly in 2009. There have been some hints from the Mr. Big camp. So the media focus has been on the tours, clinics, and especially on the stuff he did with Ibanez, but it really has been pretty balanced. Most musicians would consider that sort of release schedule somewhere between grueling and insane. + You can't have a tour without an album. It's a chicken-and-egg cycle.

Lots of people seem to wonder what Paul thinks about these sorts of things - illegal downloads, file sharing, the state of the conventional "in-hand media" record industry, which income streams seem to be working out the best for the modern musician in this new age, where the business is going, etc. but, if he chooses not to talk about it, that's completely okay.
That's because it's his business and really, it's not very musical. It might be something we (fans) don't have to know... that he can safely keep to himself. Kinda like stuff about religion, or family life.
Plus, it might be something he doesn't even handle. Maybe his attorney or his manager worry about these things, so he can spend more time writing new material meant to be released - either to play for us live, or to record for us.

I guess I simply wish there was a way that people who know what the "wrong" stuff is, and would prefer to not see it in front of their faces, have a better way to report it to content providers.

Dave Ellefson has some pretty interesting points of view on the music business... look up his material; I know he has some sort of video blogs about this sort of thing on YT. I know, he's not Paul, but he's talking about a lot of factors that influence modern music. It's well worth checking out.

> Dino! Where's my orange PGM pics?

LOL! I got your PM and I'll e-mail them to you when I finish digging them out of the directory they're in. For the past 2 days I've been in too much pain to do much at all, and my head's starting to hurt again right now. Ugh! You haven't been forgotten!

Addition:
There's a joke that goes something like this.
"I was in a band, and I made a record label too. I signed myself. I promised myself the moon. When I put my album out, I got screwed as the band, but I made a killing as the label."

More "new" (actually, just newly posted) videos featuring Pablo... (these are from a G3):

Getting rich off of music is impossible for 99.99% of aspiring artists, but I think making a living off of music is still possible, and if they were hoping to get rich I don't have much sympathy for them.

It seems like a lot of people in the business of producing information have unrealistic expectations.

You could make the argument that everyone is entitled to be successful and all that, but in a more general sense (speaking about movies, software, artwork, you name it) the expectation that you can sell multiple copies of an intangible product indefinitely for more than $0 defies the the conventional sense of the definition of value, which is based on scarcity of availability and implies a cost to produce the copy of the product (like the cost of actually building a car, not just designing it). It always enrages me when I see those obnoxious "copying is stealing" propaganda ads on TV and before movies; to steal something you need to actually take away something the victim had, and they no longer have it.

I'll admit I use to be one of those people that bought almost nothing in the above categories, but more recently I've definitely been trying hard to go out of my way to support artists and software that I love, and I'll happily hand over money to them especially if they treat me with respect and not like a thief. I would have to strongly reconsider buying any of Paul's albums or DVDs if they were published under a label involved in abusive copyright litigation and lobbying (see: RIAA).

Anyway, sorry for the rant. TLDR: Support artists you like, don't fund the RIAA!

PS. Just bugging you about the pics Dino, take your time! ;) I'm just impatient because I'm excited to have them. Since I can never seem to win a PGM on Ebay I think I'm going to try to get an Orange built and it'd be nice to have all the reference I can get.

Is it just me or has Paul shredded himself into a corner? Hear me out, I'm a P.G fan and gave been for years but it seems lately that hes gotten repetative. Same old tricks, nothing new. We all know hes probably the best alternate picker that there is but I think he needs a couple of "new" tricks to slay us with. Fire away.

Thanks

he is more original than 90% of the music that you hear
to me he is a machine of ideas
of course, his trademarks will always be there (they better be  )

The posted clips aren't from a DVD that Paul released with his label. The clips are from a magazine, right?
Paul already got payed and the magazine is the only one who could complain. BUT they probably put out one issue per month and the posted clips must be from an older issue that they don't sell anymore anyway

Diego, you bring up an interesting point. With "all these" videos being put up, how much of this "Paul becoming predictable" reaction by some fans, is due to overexposure / overlistening?

to be honest - i am a hypocrit for complaining since i myself watch every pg-live-vid available. and i believe (and hope) that all this live-stuff is not really a problem to him. it's the posting of his studio and tutorial-material (that's strongly copyrighted) that makes me think twice. like i said, i prefer to buy books, mags, dvds, cds instead of illegally downloading the stuff.

on your point of paul being "predictable"... i find it mildly amusing to listen to kids these days. i became a fan of paul's music mostly because of his heartfelt humor and his style and way to play the instrument. as an artist, he - of course - has developed his own syntax, semantics and all-over vocabulary that he uses time and again. but saying he is "predictable" is laughable, imho.
