Post I think I have Paul's old Lee Jackson Marshall
Many of you probably saw the 50W Lee Jackson Marshall for sale on eBay recently. It was listed as possibly belonging to Paul Gilbert. I resisted buying the amp at auction, and it didn't sell. But, alas, I couldn't help myself and bought the amp privately from the owner the next day.

The more I looked at the amp, the more I thought this might be the amp which Paul lent to a friend, only to be stolen out of his friend's car and not seen again. Paul received insurance money for the amp from his friend. The reasons I thought this might be Paul's amp are:

- The Marshall's serial number make it a 1974 model, as Paul's was

- The appears to be a genuine Lee Jackson signature inside the amp chassis, dated 2-85

- There are three Paul Gilbert signatures on the amp.
--- One is written in marker inside the amp chassis, maybe by Lee Jackson to keep track of whose amp this was?
--- One is etched into the upper left of the front panel.
--- The third is the most interesting. It is etched into the left side of the back panel, and was made before the effects loop was added to the amp, presumably in 1985.

- It came with KT-88 power amp tubes installed, which is highly unusual for a 1974 Marshall. The second time Paul had his Lee Jackson modified, the power amp tubes were converted to KT-88's. The tubes were making a strange crackling sound when I received the amp and I did not have any KT-88's, so I quickly replaced them with some 6550's I had laying around, which was the original tube for this amp, and rebiased. I'm going to switch back to the KT-88's soon.

- The best part is, it sounds just like to first two Racer X albums. :D

I took a bunch of photos and sent this link to Paul:

Here was Paul's reply:

I'm guessing that that is the Marshall I used on the first couple Racer X albums. Lee modified it a couple times, and had installed KT88 power tubes at the end. It looks like someone must have re-biased it and put the original 6550's back in. I remember it sounded great, either way. Enjoy the tone!

Thank you,

Paul

I replied to Paul and offered him the amp, since he is really the rightful owner (the previous owner did this as well). Paul didn't reply to my second email, but he replied to the previous owner that he's got too many amps and didn't want this one back. Now I get to enjoy it.

I put a video up of what the amp sounds like today, albeit at very low volume. There is an attenuator on the back panel which allows use of the amp at very low volumes, but with killer Marshall tone.

Anyway, thought you guys might be interested in where Paul's amp is today. It will be given a good home, and gigged regularly at high volumes on weekends.

Peace,
Jim

*amazed* You're so lucky. Or you're not lucky, and just hard working / persistent, incredibly detail-oriented, and very good at finding things.

This is top class sleuthing. You have just happily solved a mystery that began unhappily in what... 1986?

I love this story so much.

The G in that Gilbert sig looks like Paul's hand. I don't know about Lee Jackson's signatures but the one in bold black marker on the inside of the amp looks like Paul's writing. It's close enough that Paul identified it as his amp - and was able to roughly tell you what he used it for. SWEET!

(Hang on to this - it is a treasure. Treat 'er well.)

Good work, and welcome to the forum.

I can definitely hear the similarity in sound to the RX albums. Sounds huge! Grats on finding it, it's good to know it's in a good place. :)

Sounds so good. Your video showed the kick that the amps bass and power really gives.

Old recording equipment does not do that amp justice back in the day. That sounded amazing.
