Weird, am I the only one who has far more trouble with inside picking than with outside picking? Perhaps I am doing something wrong but I can't do that lick fast at all when I start with an upstroke.

no, if you start that lick with an upstroke you start it on the high note.
and if you start the lick with a down stroke you start on the lowest note.

in the end the picking is exactly the same just a different starting point.

What? this doesn't make sense to me. Of course the picking is different whether you start on upstroke or downstroke. He is saying if he starts with upstroke its hard for him since he's not good at inside picking. A lot of people have trouble with inside picking, in petrucci's rock discipline video he has a section on it because he's not good at it either.

sorry, i read what he said wrong i think.

beaker i think your getting ahead of yourself a bit, going faster then you can really handle.

whip out the metronome and practice the lick at a slower comfortable pace and really get it clean and smooth, and really in your fingers. then when it becomes kinda second nature speed it and repeat.

thanks, the just a girl song is quite amusing, i did it for a a school assignment about mixing two bands 'sound' together, i think it worked out nice.

just practice that lick consistently for at least 1/2 an hour a day and in a week you'll notice a big difference. and its great because you don really need to concentrate to play that lick so every time your watching tv or a movie just pick up your axe and practice that lick and by the end of the movie you'd of practiced for about an hour ad a half without realisng it.

Hey guys, the PG lick you're talkin about, is actually an Al di Meola lick. He already played stuff like that on an electric guitar in 1976! Listen to the Elegant Gypsy album, the song Race with the devil on spanish highway is good example.

True, but PG took that lick to the next level.

1. Putting it into the context of a metal band
2. Using it and expanding upon it in intense rock 1, teaching kids all over the world to use the lick to negotiate three-note-per-string scales
3. Doing it for so long and still discovering new licks based around it

Although Di Meola was doing it when PG started guitar, it was Paul who brought it real attention and acclaim. He demonstrated that the lick can be used in so many situaltions, and also that it is a wonderful tool for training your hand on inside/outside picking.

GO PAUL!!!

He came up with it himself anyway so it's not like he stole it.

brono...

do you use any mute technique or something?

-When I play the lick with a clean tone, I can go.. let's say 120bpm, then when I switch to dist there's the annoying noise that occurs (the E and B string ringing together when I play the E string and they go back to the B -> They ring together most of the time).

I have to go back to 90bpm.

At 90bpm I play it good with distorted sound and I'm not using any particular muting technique (at least it seems to me...)

do you mute strings somehow or it's just practice :?:

I usually like to use a light mute on that technique, but depending on what dynamics im after i'll mute or not.

I dont get that ringing problem with distortion, i geuss its just practice and me trying to mimic that machine gun picking sound paul gets.

I think soundclips would help make this thread more effective. But then Brono would win for sure.

thanx, I just used to practice it an hour a day to try and get my picking happening, it helped alot. the only reason i made that clip was to help show someone an effective way to get speed pickin happening.

and trust me i dont think this means im good, it just means i could ply that lick fast. thats all.

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=446017&songID=4417120

i think the last one was 160bpm.

holy cow how is your picking technique???? wrist? fingers? arm? wanna know!!!

I just copied the way paul plays. I used to move the pick with my thumb and finger but when i saw Intense rock i just loved how neat paul gilbert looks (and sounds) when he plays. So i changed the way i hold my pick and and started to use my wrist instead of thumb. It took a bit to get used too but it was worth it.

so just watch intesne rock and learn form the master.

I think a good way to practice it without getting bored is to play this part from Superheroes:
