Hi,

They are both great pickups, it really depends on what sound you're looking for. I have a PGM30 with a Humbucker From Hell in the neck, and a JS1000 with the FRED in the neck. Personally, I like the FRED better because it really has a lot of character. The HFH sounds a bit too 'round' for my liking, I have trouble getting good note definition from it, but that could be just my playing style and amp settings.

Pickups are really hard to choose until you hear them in your guitar, through your amp, with your fingers :). My advice is to find a place that will let you exchange the pickups if you don't like them, that way your risk is minimized.

Good luck...

Neck: Tone Zone

I have a JS1000. Fred in the bridge, PAF Pro in the neck. The Fred rocks!

Yeah, you're right! I was backwards :) So my original comments apply to the PAF Pro in the neck - but the FRED in the bridge is killer too. I think the JS1000 has the best stock pickups of any guitar I've owned.

I think the FRED pick up is great, I have one in the bridge of one of my guitars. Nice tone with lots growl and hip harmonics. It works great with the Paf-Pro in the neck and I think it would sound good w/The Humbucker from Hell. I have also used my Fred w/a Fast Track 1 and it sounded really nice. The Fast Track 1 is like the single coil sized HFH.

I didn't like the Fred in the bridge position, moved it to neck and bought a Tone Zone... nice combo.

I find the HFH pup a little too bright and not enough low end for me ;-)

The FRED pickup is a pickup designed by Dimarzio for Joe Satriani. It is great for the bridge position as if has a little more mids and more harmonics than a PAF type humbucker.

Great story I heard...why is it called a FRED?
Dimarzio gave Joe 4 prototype pups so he named them Fred, Barney, Wilma and Betty. He liked Fred the best and it kept the name ;-)
