Post Paul @ Iridium w/ the Les Paul Trio
Got to see Paul play last night at the Iridium jazz club in NY with the Les Paul trio. For anyone not familiar, it's a very small jazz club on Broadway in NYC. It was great to literally be 5 feet from Paul for the whole show. He was kind enough to do a meet and greet afterwards. Although I've seen him play several times, I never bothered to meet him before. Nice fella.

Anyway, it was a very eclectic set. Some of the highlights were:

- A slower, jazzed-up version of "Synchronicity I" by the Police.

- "Man On The Silver Mtn." by Rainbow.

- "Still Got The Blues" by Gary Moore.

- "The Lemon Song" by Led Zep.

- "Beating Around The Bush" by AC/DC.

- "Blue Rondo" by Dave Brubeck.

- "Stay With Me" by the Faces.

Can't remember what else right now, but I'll update when I can. No originals, unfortunately.

Oh, and for you Brits, I happened to sit next to Phil Hilborne, as apparently we have some mutual friends. Another nice fella. Funny as hell, too.

He did play a small bit of Blue Ronda A La Turk.

What was your opinion on the house guitarist guy? I know he was old so I feel bad commenting on it but from the parts I heard where he played something other than chords it seems incredibly sloppy. Seemed nice though (I wasn't there but I saw some of the online stream)

Oh, there was an online stream? Did they show the trio play before Paul came out? We thought he was fine for that (traditional jazz), but the poor old guy just did not have a clue how to play ANYTHING even remotely related to rock. I spoke to him briefly after the show, and he was not terribly friendly either.

The bassist, however, was a MONSTER. He was reading his ass off for most of the night, and had great chops, too. Same goes for the pianist. Emi played great and clearly was in her element with much of the material. Bravo to her. The drummer was really good, too, but didn't really know the classic rock tunes and we missed not hearing some of the accents that he didn't bother to learn.

But, we didn't care -- overall it was awesome. Always a treat to watch Paul. The FOH mix turned to shit, though, at the same time as his monitor mix went to shit, and never came back.

From what I've seen, the old guy tried to play something he wasn't used to... and just sucked as I would if I tried playing a Shawn Lane song.

He should have stuck with a chord/jazzy solo. He was good at that.

I forgot the name of the drummer, but he is a monster, if he is who he think he is... the guy who played at Paul's Great Guitar Escape last year.

I watched both sets live on the Iridium website, it was very entertaining.
The drummer, I think, was Rodney Holmes? And yes, he was outstanding as was the bass player.

Lou and John (guitar and piano) had some nice parts but also some parts that clashed but overall it didn't sour the music to my ears.

Also yes, the live stream did show about 10 mins of the trio performing before Paul, Emi, and Rodney came out.
