Post Paul Gilbert Live at Deke's Guitar Geek Festival
Hello!

THIS FRIDAY, January 20th... I will be doing a special live show with my solo band in Anaheim, CA. The venue is at the Anaheim Plaza Hotel Ballroom. It's very close to the NAMM show, but you do not need a NAMM pass to come to the show. It is open to the public.

My show will be part of DEKE'S GUITAR GEEK FESTIVAL, so there are many other great guitarists and bands playing as well. Click this link for more information: http://www.dekedickerson.com/guitargeek/index.htm

Also, check out this special (discount) offer from the promoter:

"Shhhhhh! Special announcement for Paul's upcoming appearance at the GUITAR GEEK FESTIVAL on Friday, Jan. 20. Admission for the whole Friday night festivities are $50, but for those who want to show up right as Paul takes the stage, we'll be offering the "Paul Gilbert Special"--starting at 11:30 pm, you can get in to see Paul's headlining set for only $20! Paul goes on at midnight and finishes the night, so this is a great bargain for those who just want to see Paul rock the house. This price isn't advertised and is only available at the door on Friday night. Just mention the "Paul Gilbert Special" when you get to the door."

This will be my first show with the awesome rhythm section of Kelly LeMieux and Rodney Holmes, my wife Emi on keyboards, some surprise special guests, and some music that I have never played live before.

Check out Rodney! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ilVynAy2Ns

I'll see you this Friday, for an amazing show!

Thank you,

Paul

That's cool, it's the day before I turn 20; do you think I can swim across the ocean and make it by that day?

Yay, he'll probably whip out Jeff Martin, Scott Travis, John Alderete and Bruce Bouillet, play the two new singles of the new Racer X album and announce the band's reunion and upcoming world tour !

Or not.

Ive heard about that to. Also Judas Priest will support them with KK coming back. The New Album will be produced by Rick Rubin (the project name is something like "black sabbath reunion")

Sure, and Judas Priest and Racer X perform Painkiller with 4 guitars, Rob and Jeff exchanging lines and two bass solos each one minute long played by Juan and Ian.

Then I'll probably blow my load.

This was the best show Paul has ever done!!!!! The set list was great- the playing was fantastic and the tone with his vintage modern and red frm with injectors was the best! I took a bunch of non Gilbert fans and everyone was converted to adoring minions! Paul is a consummate entertainer and his ability to wow the crowd with his playing and showmanship was incredible! Also his singing was great on the vocal tunes- very very impressive- Paul must have been practicing as his vocals as his vocal range and vibrato are truly excellent these days!! A set list that ran the gamit from BTO to Dave Brubeck along with perennial favs technical difficulties and scarified slayed the audience of around 400 peeps!
Well done good sir- well done indeed!!!
:D

My impressions of that clip:

At first it sounded like the Konami version of TD. I could actually picture some 8-bit video game character jumping over obstacles and shit.
Then instead of the D-major string skipping lick it's a Screen Door-ish arpeggio that leads into one of the best, most melodic solos I've ever heard over the Comfortably Numb progression.

And then it goes back to the console game.

So from meh to wha? to holy crap that was awesome back to meh.

I loved, loved the solo. 60 seconds of brilliance. I'm stealing a bunch of that for sure.

Post Re: Paul Gilbert Live at Deke's Guitar Geek Festival
I can appreciate this so called "dynamic version" of Racer X classics, since I already can listen to the originals and to plenty of great live ones... so I suppose these soft versions add some variety, especially since Paul is touring with his solo band, not necessarily that metal.

So I guess, in context, these versions can be appreciated and understood.

But I damn hope this isn't the only kind of music he has in mind, and that he has plans of playing the "unleash the fockin' fury" versions of those songs and come up with some new Racer X in the near future.

Wasn't there but based on the youtube clips that I could find the set list included (not in order) -

Technical Difficulties
Scarified
Space Truckin' (Deep Purple)
Taking Care of Business (BTO)
Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf)
Rock Island Line (Johnny Cash)
Somebody Stole My Thunder (Georgie Fame)
Blue Rondo A La Turk (Dave Brubeck)
Bitch (Rolling Stones)

If you told me in 1987 that Paul would be performing a gig with a three piece horn section I would have thought you were absolutely crazy. But that cover of Bitch with the horns was awesome. Didn't mind the new versions of TD and Scarified, but I hope he doesn't get into the habit of playing them that way all the time - that would really suck.

I loved that version of Technical Difficulties. I still prefer the original, but what? You want to hear the same version over and over again? Kudos to Paul for trying something new. And yes, the solo was magic.
