Post Re: Yellow Matter Custard Reunites For 3 Shows!!
I didn't bring my camera since I had a lot of stuff going on this weekend and didn't want to have one more thing to worry about. Plenty of people were taking pictures i'm sure many will show up online eventually.

The show was sold out. It wasn't in a normal venue it was at an old movie theater that was built in the 1920's. Everything sounded fine to me. It sounded better than many concert venues I've been to in the past.

There was some merch being sold before the show. I saw yellow shirts that said yellow matter custard with the tour dates. There might have been another shirt I didn't take a close look. They were also selling cd's of the first YMC gigs from 8 years ago.

There were a few technical difficulties during the set. Pauls amp wasn't turned on to start the set. Neal's keyboard had a stuck key. Pauls guitar signal was cutting in and out there was a loose connection in one of his pedals or something. Everyone looked like they were having a great time on stage. They were joking around and telling stories between songs. They put on a good show.

@xjustice09x : Cool!

From the vid - they looked like they were having a blast, and Kasim sounded fantastic!
I was expecting Paul to be singing. It was a surprise.

What was up with the rubber ducky guitar solo?! (Helter Skelter) Who let that person onstage?! LOL. I saw it on the video that the Bullet Cable staff uploaded to YouTube.

Missing the Chi-town show tonight (feeling too ill to even look for videos tho)... sigh.

Quick note - there was a flight delay out of Chicago to NY (due to "icy" weather apparently), but all is otherwise fine, so chillax & sit tight. :)

The shows are reported to run ~1.5 to ~2 hours in length. I have only read one review written like a review though. So it might be best to PM an attendee and ask.

Ok, I’ve been put off posting here for a while, but with lack of responses so far on YMC thought I’d throw my hat into the Ring(go) regards Long Beach.
Awesome, awesome concert! Well worth the trip to CA. Some thoughts off the top of my head having just returned home. The venue was pretty small, packed but not completely stuffed. It might have been sold out but there were 2 empty seats next to us and one opposite me across the aisle. Something I said? We were 10 rows back of at least 30 rows or so. Venue seats 380. A few front row seats seem to have been reserved for ‘special’ folks such as Damon Fox of Bigelf (the ‘crazy duck guy’ on the Helter Skelter vid). Neal mentioned his wife surprised him by turning up but don’t know where she was sitting. We were looking for Emi but couldn’t see her.

Merch was on sale: the yellow t-shirt you see Neal wearing in the photos and a black one with their 4 faces in the style of the Let It Be album in original poses. Both have on the reverse the wording “Yellow Matter Custard” in glorious technicolour 3D Beatlesesque style, plus the tour dates and their names below. The DVD and CD from last time are also on sale.

Flash photography and video recording were not allowed – there was a dedicated announcement before the band were on about this. Seeing how small the place was I would say this was fair enough – but really pleased to see someone already snuck a vid on YouTube though. No one was allowed to go screaming to the front either (had to remain in seats, or aisles) since the concert was being recorded from both sides of the stage. Not very rock and roll but then this is probably in keeping with the 1960’s I suppose.

I did take quite a few photos from where I was sitting which are not as good as the ones already posted on the CalProg site already but I did get a photo of Paul’s pedalboard and gear beforehand. I’ll get these to you asap – surprise guitar waiting on stage (unless you already worked it out). He played just the 2 guitars. Beatles dolls were out again. We thought it was weird at the time that Paul’s amp was not switched on when checking it out before the show.

The band were a bit late on; around 8pm someone posted the FOUR-PAGE set list on stage for each… later Neal’s set list papers got mixed up and Kasim had to re-arrange it for him under his legs while mid-song. A very rock and roll moment. Mike was dressed as Ringo in his hippy days (v. cool), Kasim looked more like Paul McCartney than Paul McCartney in his waistcoat attire. Not sure if Neal and Paul received the ‘come as a Beatle’ message but this didn’t detract. Paul did his fake British accent for the most part in honour of George so this makes up for not coming in a red Sgt. Pepper outfit and hat! V. funny to hear this, reminded me of RX at the Whiskey a Go Go interval moments….Not quite Liverpudlian Paul, but good effort nevertheless!

Set list was excellent - someone already posted it above - some real gems in there, and probably the first time some of those songs have ever been played live. They played Birthday in addition which Neal dedicated to PapaJ?… someone help me out here. V. v. cool to hear Savoy Truffle, my ego likes to tell me I planted this idea but can’t take any credit, although its not an obvious one I think.

Mike dedicated Things We Said Today to his parents relaying a sweet story about this being ‘their’ song. Mike did much of the inbetween-song talking (naturally) but the banter between the band was highly entertaining, with them relaying stories about the Beatles and what they meant to them. Very interactive with the audience; very dynamic group on stage, laughed their way through the v. rare mistakes, and dodgey equipment etc. Overall I would say they sounded awesome though, and really beautiful harmonies.

Mike asked at the start were there any real Beatles fans in the audience who had come just for the Beatles music? (ie not DT, A7X, RX, PG fans etc..) – big cheer! Kasim took lead vocals on most songs and was absolutely stunningly brilliant. Neal also sang quite a few too and Paul took the lead on about 5 songs or so. Mike sang on a few also. Really good vocals all of them. If you want details I’ll have to jog the memory banks a bit. Paul sang Any Time At All for sure, but the most memorable of his leads for me was the very short and fast Her Majesty off Abbey Road which they inserted into the middle of the AR ‘Medley’ rather than at the end. Paul also played the harmonica as and when necessary through a couple of songs. He forgot to sing a verse on one occasion (I forget which song) and just played a solo through it instead, which was more than cool. Penny Lane and Fool on The Hill had no original guitar parts in and Mike gave special credit to Paul for his creativity in substituting original horn, flute and fire-engine with v. clever near-as-damn-it-sounding guitar parts. Neal handed his guitar to his brother Al during Yer Blues and he and Paul had a long-ish guitar dual, ie not in keeping with the Beatles (but v. cool none the less), and at some point Mike said they had to wrap it up! Mike laid down on his back on the floor in front of the stage for the tambourine moments as per Ringo in the original vid for You've Got To Hide Your Love Away. These guys were just having a lot of fun. At one point Paul started to play the post-mid section riff from the Led Zepp song Dazed and Confused in jest, to which Mike retorted “Don’t get me started!”. In another moment Paul starting singing To Be With You (same chords to a song they were about to launch into, can’t remember which) which got an on-stage laugh but I think it was lost on most of audience.

Apparently their first practice together was just 2 days before the show, so all credit to them for pulling such an awesome concert off with relatively few hitches. Band were on about 8.10pm ish and it ended around 10.30 pm. Apparently at least Paul and Neal stayed around afterwards but we had a 2 mile walk back to the hotel in atrocious monsoonal weather so gave hanging around a miss. Paul responded to us on email the next day though (apologising for the weather!) which more than made up for us not staying around to say hello again.

I’ve been looking forward to such a show for much longer than the tickets have been on sale (thanks @SilentBob777…..); and it was worth every last little shiny metal penny. For me this was how the Beatles should have sounded live without the screaming, crying and knicker-wetting. Huge congratulations to the band for pulling off the best Beatles tribute there will ever be with such finesse. A superb 68th birthday tribute to George.

Mike, Paul – what about another Hammer of the Gods? Jimmy Page is 68 next year…..

Very fun, awesome show tonight in NYC. Everyone played great, sounded great and shared singing lead. Paul kept it pretty classy only taking a few opportunities to tear it up. Paul's custom 12-string is giving me GAS.

Here are some photos: http://shred.imgur.com/yellowmattercustard

Here's a high-res shot of Paul's pedal board: http://i.imgur.com/2vsNM.jpg

Tons of people taking videos, so keep your eye out on YouTube.

Someone said there were 800 fans in attendance at BBKing's. VERY impressive!

Here's some Chicago video documentation.

Paul makes it look so effortless. A treat: Kasim and Neal sound great (vocals-wise).
You're so lucky if you got to go to these shows.

@ShreddyRayVaughn: I like this pic a lot - too bad it's a little blurred. Some of the photos you got are AMAZING. Like front-page paulgilbert.com / see it on a laminate pass in a year amazing. Really incredible work.

Oh superb! I knew we should have gone to NYC instead....screaming and videoing at the front allowed (and cheaper tickets!)
I bow to your pedalboard shot, sir

I was at the show last night. Great show, but man, some of those songs were obscure. They also got much louder toward the end of the show for some reason.

Surprised no one has mentioned that Paul has been using a Marshall JMD102 for these shows, which is a hybrid amp. It has a digital preamp with a tube power amp and built-in effects. It's basically an update to the JMP-1 in a combo format.

Any idea why Paul had black tape on his left middle finger?

These are pictures from the B.B King club show.

I was right up front, the only person in front of me was the camera guy that was filming for this who asked to get in front of me. He said that they are doing the video and audio right this time (not like last time) He said something like 30 mics or something crazy like that going into the mix and a bunch of cameras so this DVD will likely be very good.

Here is a link to the whole album: http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected] ... 051063271/

Here is a video of them coming out + Back In The U.S.S.R: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1H_oyTIrd4

Video from an impromptu song when Neil's keyboard malfunctioned and he had to restart his computer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SB6PxXPKf54

Here are a couple of my favorite pictures:

It may have some Beatles meaning because Portnoy also had an identical ring of tape on his right hand just like Paul. Didn't look like it was there for drumming.

He doesn't look injured... On his right hand, it's not tight enough to be any sort of band-aid. (black electrical tape is infinitely cooler then band-aids. LOL)
Although the (tiny) change of wardrobe - the addition of the black tape - might make it difficult to splice shots.
(it may end up something for "those in the know" to be able to pick out the splices)

This is because Mike Portnoy just said that he now begins work on the DVD.
It will be released! *excitement*
"Thanks to everyone that came to the YMC shows...they were an absolute blast! For those that didn't make it, I now begin work on the DVD..."
:)

Here's a backstage pre-show shot. I forget ATM if this was Chicago or NYC.

The impromptu song video is priceless! Pure class. How enjoyable. That is what was missing from the Fuzz Universe tour... those moments - that spontaneous musicality. Photos are awesome as well. You rock... thank you so much for sharing this with us.

It's cool to compare Paul's Paperback Writer solos - just about no similarities!

Thanks FD - Yea, I'm sad that one came out blurry. It's hard to clap and live in the moment while trying to quickly snap pictures! :)

@stringskipper: Cool. When you get some time... it will be great to see the pictures!

Here are some more video goodies, in the meantime.

:)

Do not miss the video of Paul playing & singing "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" because he said that was his favorite Beatles song somewhere, sometime. It's sort-of an extra special treat!
