Post Paul Gilbert Returns to MI to Teach Private Lessons
This is the exact sort of event I will return to the board for, to post about.
I got the tip from board member alexkhan (Ed Yoon). Thank you, Ed!

I cannot wait to hear about the jam sessions between Guthrie Govan and Paul & Emi Gilbert (purportedly to take place for MI students only, Jan. 16 - read all about it in the Guthrie post-NAMM clinic tour thread). :)

To the article:

http://www.mi.edu/news/paul-gilbert-ret ... te-lessons

"Paul Gilbert Returns to MI to Teach Private Lessons
Jan 15, 2010
During the second full week of January, two dozen GIT students will enjoy private, one-on-one guitar lessons with world-renowned guitarist and MI grad Paul Gilbert."

Um, I believe that's this week.
So, is Refried Bean one of the lucky 24 students?
If you are one of these students, please post your experiences and stuff here. Heck, if you aren't, you may as well post here too.

I wonder why Paul didn't post this on his website? It's a big deal. Maybe because it's only available to MI students? *shrug* It's still something to look forward to. MI posted about it so that's great. :)

If you go, and you are allowed to cellphone/video the clinic on the 16th, PLEASE DO. If Guthrie asks you to edit his parts out, please do - that way we can still hear the Paul stuff. I want to hear Paul and Emi playing some fusion and jazz (or heck, maybe they'll coax Guthrie in to playing some Ramones). :)

Bye again!

LOL note the date in the article. Today is Jan. 12th. I don't exist in the future. They posted a few days in advance I gather.

Yep! Time travel is the first order of business. :)

Nah... I just happened to see Ed's comment in that thread VV down there, this morning. Nobody else took notice of it. I wondered why it didn't cause an instant uproar. People have been clamoring for Paul and Guthrie to jam together for ages! I thought it was a tremendously exciting musical idea. I hit the MI site asap. When I didn't see it on the MI calendar right away, I started hunting around their site, and found the link. Nothing gets me to hunt more thoroughly then a cryptic link! :)

Seriously, this post is for 2 reasons:

1) It's faster for me to make a new post then request someone edit an old one.
2) I would rather make my own corrections.

Here is the correction. The MI / GIT concert-clinic date (which I really hope will be allowed to be audio or video taped) for 'Three G's': Guthrie and 2 Gilberts, is January 19th, not the 16th.

And here is the addition - the thread you guys should read. It has all of Guthrie's clinic dates in it.

http://racerxband.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=19183

I'd e-heckle (request songs as a joke), but I can't edit, so... oh well.

Can't wait to hear about this. It is a meeting of guitar giants.
Those lucky MI students!!

How I wish I could take those lessons :( but at least we'll get to see what Paul and Guthrie will come up with together. I think it will be really interesting and I can't wait to see it.

I was noticing your conspicuous absence Jenn, where you been at anyway? :P

Ah, nevermind, I found the relevant thread. I never read the offtopic forums. I won't talk about it here to avoid derailing this thread. I'll send you a PM though.

He never said they'd be jamming together.. simply that they'd be there. I figured he meant as members of the crowd. Where'd you hear that?

Lucky M.I. people

I sat in at a friend's private lesson. Paul is deaf as hell, even within 3 feet.

that's all you can say after a private lesson with Paul Gilbert?

I just sat in on a private lesson. I didn't get to actively play guitar with him or something. He was very insistent on keeping the lessons 1 on 1.

And it was only 30 minutes long...so they didn't go over that much. They did jam for like, 10 minutes, which is already 1/3 of the lesson.

A true professional, through & through!

If you were paying for a private lesson, I'm sure you'd appreciate a teacher with Paul's attitude & approach, whether 20 people were in the room, or just you.

Know that I'm not flaming Sir Robin.

I just think that's awesome, though!

Eggsactly. The coolest part of these lessons was definitely just having the experience to jam with Paul (my friend did, I didn't). Everything else I've seen before, so it wasn't that extremely special. It was probably more exciting for my buddy, who isn't as familiar with Gilbert lessons/music.

Paul was very humble, he didn't really show off the full extent of his abilities. He was very phrasing oriented (his timing is impeccable). And like I said, 30 minutes is NOT a lot of time at all, so I doubt that we milked a fraction of the cool stuff he could've showed us.

Post Re: Paul Gilbert Returns to MI to Teach Private Lessons
He's at it again... New news.

http://www.mi.edu/news/private-lessons- ... ul-gilbert

"Private Lessons are available to GUITAR majors (Bachelor, Associate, Certificate, Encore) ONLY! Here's how it works:

* Lesson slots will be awarded by random drawing
* All entrants will have an equal chance to land a lesson slot (no need to line up early!)

* To enter, meet at the McCadden entrance to the Concert Hall at 8:20am on Wednesday, July 28. Raffle tickets will be distributed and the drawing will be held on the spot."

Important Note to lesson winners who read this forum:

What did we learn last time? If you have a funky-looking cellphone that has a video function - like an iPhone - allow for it to be inspected / [humor] blessed / given mojo / touched a bunch by Paul. You know that the guitar mojo can then be applied to your guitar via touching the phone to it! [/humor] Don't even try video recording. It is a NO-NO. Audio might be OK with permission. Ask first.

GOOD LUCK to everyone.
(And please let us know if he gives you the 2010 Guitar Secrets handout.)
