That's because Al didn't wear spandex and ruffled shirts and do leg kicks on stage...X

AND I don't remember Al De Meola ever Releasing The Fury to help his career at all.

But seriously I don't think it was just a fast alternate picking technique that made Yngwie famous.

I remember seeing in an interview somewhere Yngwie giving Al props.

But anyway,
I think technically Paul has the edge, but they were both so damn impressive it's disgusting.

Al dimeola was playing arenas with and after the group Return to Forever was hot. The Mclaughlin/dimeola/de lucia albums have sold in the MILLIONS. Yngwie came on the scene for a new generation of guitar fans, sort of merging the harmonic minor keyboard/guitar duels of Jan Hammer/Dimeola, with the stage antics of Hendrix/Deep Purple etc.

Anyway, technique is not something you should "hear" unless it is limiting the player in someway. I'd say Bruce had a cleaner sound overall (based on the live recordings), which I attribute to a better left hand technique. But Paul was way ahead of his student in terms of right hand speed and control. And Paul did those crazy wide stretches for the pentatonic in Scit Scat Wah. It was a close match, but I think Bruce had some of his own things going on. I often suspected that his amp was louder, and closer sounding than Paul's on the live albums, but that could be the mix.

You have to give credit to Paul for being a good teacher, and Bruce a good student. I give a vote for Bruce's left hand, and 2 votes for Paul's right hand.

Definatly Paul....
On the other hand, I think both of these guys can learn anything with a decent amount of practise (So can the people on this board^^)
In other words, there are no songs that can't be learned thorugh Practise!
