There was a similar poll in the past, but it asked whether or not people played guitar. It was 27 | 3 in favour of guitar or somewhere around there.

Proud to be a guitarist for more than half my life now. 20 years now. It only seems like yesterday that I was a kid playing in clubs. Now I'm a man playing in clubs. Not much changes. I love it.

I think racer x would be VERY popular even in the eyes of even non-musicians if racer x had some decent exposure..

I've gotten a lot of my friends into racer x, who LOVE them, and they're not musicans.

I only found out about racer x becuase I am a musican, and I think thats where most of the fans fall.. (At least these days)

Kind of a secret musicans circle underground band thing. 8)

Post Racer X/Musicians
Students at the Musician's Institute undoubtedly made up a large portion of Racer X' initial fanbase. Nearly every serious hard rock/heavy-metal musician that I have ever met respects Racer X. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth fame even listed "Second Heat" as one of his favorite albums in an old issue of Guitar for the Practicing Musician. I also remember reading in guitar mags that guys like Billy Sheehan and Steve Vai would go to Racer X shows. Early on, the band built a reputaion by being a great live band with tremendous chops. The lyrics are not any better or worse than the rest of the LA bands from the mid 80s...some are just ridiculous. (You can't help but laugh when you hear Jeff sing "I'm a poser and I'm bitchin'......." Paul actually wrote that line!) I prefer Racer X much more than other "musician's bands" like Dream Theater and Symphony X... both of the aforementioned bands bore the hell out of me.

Definitely a musician. If I didn't have my guitar I think I'd go really crazy sometimes.

Even though Racer X has a lot of songs that can appeal to everybody, they're mainly promoted to musicians...

I saw a Shrapnel add in a Guitar magazine with Racer X being promoted, and that is probably the only magazine I've seen them in.

I think that little Racer X records containing "Frenzy" and "Scarified" were given out as freebies in Guitar World magazine back in "the day." although there are people here who would know about that better than me...

But if Racer X was promoted alongside the other great metal bands of today, I think they could definitely appeal to non-musicians.

Yeah, that's true. I've gotten my brother and a few of his friends who don't play any instruments into Racer X. Definitely a band that appeals to people other than musicians. Although now it's kind of funny because i either hear "Superheroes" or "Viking Kong" blasting out of my brother's room every 5 minutes. Better that then the nu-metal he listens to.

I play, but not well. I found out about Racer X before I started guitar though. I was just really into finding out about guitarists.

Is it a good or bad thing when every Racer X fan is a musician?
