Would anybody know where the band's name Racer X originated from, I always thought it originated form the Speed Racer 70's cartoon, but I could be wrong

I think it was your cool user name that did it.
Then they went back in their time machine, & the rest is history! :D

There's a bit more behind it.

As Paul Gilbert was auditioning potential members (who were students at MI) for his band, he came across John Alderete and one of John's friends, a drummer. Paul liked John's playing and decided he would suitably fill in the bass role for the band, but was not thrilled by his friend. The friend did, however, throw out a name suggestion for the band: Racer X. And as everyone has guessed, the name did come from the cartoon. A parting gift, if you will. This answer came directly from Paul himself--years ago, when Ken had the board post questions for the band.

Cool so if it weren't for the Original drummer Harry G, the band wouldn't be called Racer X?
That's interesting ,but i never knew Paul wasn't fascinated by Harry's playing to be honest
before I knew about Harry being the Original drummer for Racer X I thought it was Scott
Travis I was hearing in the Street Lethal album! :o

I think Ryan is talking about a different drummer.

What are you even talking about? Ryan clearly stated a drummer that was John's friend. That's it. John's friend.

Um, the one friend who used to jam & hang out with Paul was named Greg Vorobiov - he was the friend of John Alderete who recommended him to Paul - and the friend who didn't get the drum spot is named in Greg's cool article. I could be wrong but I think it was in his article. I know I posted the link somewhere on this forum.

How old is this person behind the username "Racer X"? Can't be too old because their father was at one of the shows.
I ask because the questions seem to be being asked by a young, energetic person.
It's cool to see there's renewed interest from at least one person, so maybe even if the questions seem too basic for you guys... like they didn't use the search function... or they did not read the main band site (I don't blame them - it was full of nasty malware for ages) - entertain them. Answer the questions. The dialogue you create might bring in some more lurkers or fans. If there are more then 10 active posters or fans, then maybe you have a fighting chance to get the band's attention, you know?

I never read about John's friend Greg on the Racer X website or wiki...and yes i am more of a second generation Racer X fan!
My dad was a huge Racer X fan and got me into it too...plus I am kind of a new member still on the forum, so if i have too much
of a basic Question for you guys just tell me! :)

Thanks-

Racer X-

Since there seems to be a lot of interest in this mysterious drummer who named the band, I went through my e-mails and pulled up the original response from Paul. In an e-mail dated October 4, 2002, he wrote:

Quote:
I was auditioning drummers, and John came along with a drummer named Bill, and didn't like Bill's drummer, but DID like John's playing. Bill didn't make the cut, but he did, however, name the band Racer X. He also lent us the Gretsch drum set that we used for the first record.

Hopefully that clears up some of the vagueness.

Also, must have been a cool guy.

Didn't get the gig, named the band AND lent the drumkit for recording the album!
