Post What Scarified is about....!
I happen to be doing a biology degree and it turns out 'Scarified' is actually a real word!

Some seeds must be 'scarified' when they are dispersed out into the environment before they can germinate. The process of scarification is that or weakening the seed coat so the seed can grow.

... rock and roll guys ;)

I don't think Jeff knew it was a real word...when he came up with it.

I think it was a combo of Scary and Petrified

hum... well the collins here says

scarify:
1:surgery. to make tiny punctures or superficial incisions in the skin, as for innoculating
2:(nitefly's definition)

scarify²:informal:to make scared, frightened

to me, the meaning of scarified has always been (almost) the surgery one. when some people are very depressed or passionate about something, they take a blade or any slashing/piercing object to write down something in their skin, and then they let the wound heal. the result is a scar in the shape of the message... that lasts for very long... and even forever if the person has cut deeply enough.

anyway, that's why I've always thought the name was cool.

You need to look at the pronunciation. The word you're talking about is based on the word "scar" & the song title is based on the word "scare". They look the same but, obviously, are pronounced differently.

oh ok, I'm not sure I've heard the name of the song said by the band... so it's not "a" as in scar it's the "a" as in scare? well, the second definition I found in the collins proves the word exists 8)

scarify²:informal:to make scared, frightened

Paul yells out "this is SCARIFIED" or something along the linee usually before he plays it. He always pronounces it 'scare-ified'

Scarified! Paul pronunces it like scare (as in afraid)

I always thought it was a play on the word 'scared', but in an improper form.

"This piece of heavy metal is so scary that it makes me scarified!"

Yes...There ARE 2 ways to pronounce it....

Scar (as in far) I (as in "it") fied

or

Scar (as in Scare) A (as in uh) fied.

It's most definitely pronounced like the latter....

Scare uh Fied.

I think they just needed the perfect word to describe this new song they were performing. To the fans, it would have been the ultimate twin-guitar adrenaline rush. To the guitar players, it would have been plain scary. I've always pronounced "scarified" as if it was derived from the words "scare" and "terrified". Both words aptly describe the song in its entirety.

Jeff said at the roxy that he got the prevelegium to name the song and it was the scariest song he ever heard so he was scarified or something like that...
