I don't think Racer X is really prog...far from it actually. Dream Theater, Planet X, and Symphony X is prog, but i dont think Racer X is. Almost (actually i think all) all of Racer X songs are in 4/4, and stay in the same key through the whole song. The only times they change keys is usually during a solo.

I think that Getting Heavier is a really good album. Paul's playing is at his best there. It's more "real", where its just one guitar, one bass, and drums.

Its not like Superheroes where he overdubbed his guitar multiple times. Superheroes is a great album as well.

Same, every song is fairly generic rock... Compared to DT etc.
I quite like Getting Heavier. Unless I'm in the mood for more "balls to the wall" music... then I'll go for one of the other albums...

True... But Progg doesn't mean that the music have to be filled with strange timings and synth... It's basically when the music have certain unique theoretical elements in it and such... I don't call Racer X a prog band... But name one prog band that can outplay Racer X.... Impossible... :) The musicians found in Racer X should be able to outplay just about any other band in the world (Especially when Bruce was in!)

I'm not able to explain this as good as I want to.... Sorry! :)

^They're good, but sorry, no they can't.

I can't really think of a Racer X song that's prog.

They where really awesome, but I'd say that they can't outplay Bands like Steve Vais "The Breed" etc. (except for the harmony solos of course, Paul & Bruce did the coolest dual solos ever)

I'd say Racer X was able to "outrock" any other band!
They rocked the hardest!

Jeffs solo Album is quite progressive in my opinion.

Calculator Rock! LOL! I remember going to a Mike Portnoy drum clinic years ago and he said DT's music is primarily based on mathematics!

In terms of technical skill, Jason and Marty did way more difficult stuff, and they're more prog. Different time sigs, complicated arrangement etc.

Im not saying they could outplay Paul and Bruce, but they did focus on the more technical side of their playing and complex song structures when they played live and stuff.

what about Ghost Dance, prog rock also tries to create certain atmospheres with music, and that song by the racer X is quite... well... you know... weird and it creates a quite nice atmospere, I think you could call that somehow progressive.
BTW, I love that song.

I think some people get confussed about what Prog really is.

The idea of Prog is to have no structure and go in any direction regardless of Key or Timing. Dream Theater's Train of Thought album wasent even Prog, although they do play a lot of Prog like the Song Octavarium and the older albums, most of it is, like already mentioned, very mathamatical metal/rock.

Listen to Sargent Peppers by the beatles. Thats a perfect example of Prog. Lucy in the sky with diamonds for example. It has no structure at all. The Chorus just comes out of nowhere yet works.

RacerX have never even been close to Prog

I used to think Racer X was a progressive metal band, but they're really not. It was this forum's Doug Stapp that corrected me.

Racer X is just good old fashioned '80s shred metal. Over the years, they evolved into the rock / metal band that they are today. Even though they're certainly not above busting out the shred licks, their music is more refined now and I feel it has more hooks.

That term actually comes from Scott. He heard a fan at a signing, asking Portnoy how they all ended up on the same beat after diverging....and Mike said we used a calculator to figure out the timing for everyone to hit the same spot.

So...Scott started calling Dream Theater Calculator Rock after that.

Out of curiosity, has Scott ever made mention of Portnoy as a drummer, and who are some of Scott's favorite drummers ??? Just curious...

 Wow he digs Neil Peart but doesn't like Portnoy??? Interesting...

I was more curious about any current drummers he thinks are cool as opposed to "influences"...

How bout this for an idea... Maybe some day have an autobiography on all the members of RX...
