 PG interviews in guitar mags
Hi,
I'd like to come up with a definative list of all the interviews/lessons/etc., small or large, with Paul Gilbert that have been published in any guitar magazines. These could be english language or other languages and associated with bands (Racer X, Mr. Big) or solo.
This is where I'll nedd your help. I left most of my mags at my parents place when I moved from England to Finland so only have a few. Is anyone else interested in coming up with as definative a list as we can get?
Will have a search tonight to come up with some to start with. I guess it would be useful to know the magazine name, issue # or month/year, page numbers, and whether it's a lesson, interview or both.
I'm hoping this doesn't sound too anally librarian-esque but it would be nice to have info on Paul from various years - in his own words! I don't know the legality of making copies of these for distribution, especially the older out of print mags, but it would be nice to come up with electronic (pdf) versions of any you have. I noticed that Steve Morse has a lot of his own interviews and lessons available on his own webpage so I guess it's possible.

I have a fairly extensive collection of Guitar Player, Guitar World, and Guitar for the Practicing Musician back issues. So I'll try to help you out as best I can (this may take several posts over several days/weeks)
For starters ...
Guitar World March 1987, page 72, "L.A.'s New Breed" (full page photo of Paul with Pink Mockingbird and very brief write-up on Paul and his influences)
Guitar World May 1988, pp 26-40, "Driller Killer!" (extended article on Paul and Bruce with numerous photos including three close-up photos of Paul's picking and tapping technique). Same issue, pp 103-114, "Trading Licks: Runnin' "Scarified" with Racer X" (transcription of Scarified with separate bass transcription)
Guitar World March 1991, p89, "My First Gig" (article in which various guitar players describe their first gig, including 3 paragraphs from Paul about a sixth grade talent show)
Guitar World May 1991, pp62-66,100-101, "The Next Big Thing" (cover story, with extensive interview with Paul and Billy Sheehan). Same issue, pp 69-71, "Terror Licks" (Paul Gilbert lesson with multiple photos of left hand positions)

Note - the Guitar Player Magazine with the Soundpage featuring Frenzy and Scarified was not accompanied by an article. It was actually part of a paid advertisement for Ibanez. I'll try and find the exact issue later tonight if I get a chance.

Hey, Surgeon. Did you see Paul's guitar 101 column entitled: "Monomania"? It was a letter from a japanese fan, and I haven't read anything that funny in a long time!

Guitar Player, September 1992, pp 66-74, 133, 142, "In Search of Style" (Interview with Paul circa Mr. Big. Some tabbed tutorial licks and hilarious description of his more quirky guitar collection entitled "Mr. Pig: Guitars That Go Oink" )

Will keep digging. Once I get some more I'll post a compilation of all of them.

(Machine continues to run) I know what you mean. It seems like over the last few years, guitar magazines aren't worth buying, and I only have a handfull (maybe 10) of the ones I had back when they WERE worth buying.

Total Guitar (British mag) has "Paul Gilbert's School of Shred" running at the moment, it started in issue 124 and goes on until issue 135/6 I think (yet to come)
It has some of Paul's favourite lixx on CD with a demonstration (audio) from Paul and the tab for them. It is very good, definitely worth getting. Hope this helps.

Mr. MUTTLEY requested a scan of the picture of Paul with his pink BC Rich Mockingbird. I figured everybody would get a kick out of it (Paul's hair is good for a chuckle) ... so here it is ...
Incidentally, it was shortly after seeing this in Guitar World that I went to my first Racer X show, at the Troubadour I believe.

I'm guessing he had to have been 20-21 years old. That hair is taller than "Kid & Play" See, I always thought that this was the guitar he used to record on "Street Lethal" (to bring up an old debate). I may be wrong, though.

That's about right. I believe Paul was born in 1966 (same as me). The photo was in the March 1987 issue of GW. The photo was probably taken in late 1986. So he's probably 20 in that photo.

I was just reading Guitar World 5/91.
Issue was labeled "How To Play Rock". It has an interview with Paul and Billly Sheehan and a pretty cool lesson with Paul.
