Imo, this is just mindless "shredding". Really, this is like watching a shredder with all the technique in the world, with no phrasing and musicality to it.

the reason thomas gets so much work is down to his complete mastery of the instrumnet, and impecaple groove

Impeccable groove? Are you kidding me?

That guy had no groove at all, just a random series of patterns (noodling) with no real continuity.

Most jazzers have 100x times more groove, although they may not be as outlandish.

Billy Cobham and Dennis Chambers, two legends.

WTF guys, you think he can't play a groove that adds to a song just because he's showing off his technical skills in that video?
I'm sure all the major pop artist want him in their band because of his technical tricks

No matter how much groove he's got, it's not a cool musical thing to show off for minutes to show your drumming without playing something with substance to it. Groove or not, there's definitely no movement in his playing in this video.

I didn't say he was crap.

And no, I didn't decide anything from watching one video - I assumed you were referring to the video posted when you mentioned "impeccable groove". I've heard of the guy, but admittedly havn't heard much material.

I suppose it differs from person to person as to what a drum solo really is, or if they are of the view that it comprises of any real consistant factors/ingredients. Groove to me is something that gets your head bobbing or your foot tapping. I didn't do that to the video, but was still impressed by his awesome ability.

I have to agree. drumming IMO needs huge motion, even if it's efficient or not. he needs to grease up the hinges
