Has anyone bought the gold "550" yet or really done any research on it? I'm just curious. The guitar looks cool, but if there isn't a paper trail for that guitar, I'm not sure I'd be willing to put a lot of money in it. Not to say it isn't legit, but for a non production version, I'd want full documentation of where it came from and who it was made for. That would at least give you some protection for your investment. Without it, I think you've almost got to treat it as a custom made copy. Let's face it, there's at least four or five guys on here that could make a hell of a PGM copy. --Jason

On Saturday morning Chris said he thought he had a buyer. He said he would let me know if they don't take it. I haven't heard anything further yet. I'm not planning to look into it too much further unless I do have a chance to buy it.

I am interested in it but i'm not going to pay nearly as much as I would for another model like the 700.

If it is a copy it looks like a really nice one, and I think it looks really cool.

I'm not sure yet. I wasn't expecting the wood to be like a mirror though. I thought it was gonna be natural like my N4. I'm sure i'm gonna love it though. I'm just going through the initial getting to know one another....lol.
The ToneZone's rip though :)

The same way that a car isn't truly yours until you wax it, a guitar isn't truly yours until you change the strings.

To me, there is no better pickup/body material combination than Tone Zones in Swamp Ash. The tone of my 800 just blew me away from the the very first note. --Jason

how about comparing the 800 to the 500?
i havent played a 800 yet... but my 500 sounds soooo good... i received the 500 for a week now and it is my main guitar no doubt. also i've heard many people saying the 500 is one of the best sounding PGMs. some videos also shows the 500 has great tone. (the most recent video is a Korean guy's 500 with black pickups, he has great tone)
i did a professional setup on my 500 with new strings, adjusted the pickup heights by myself, and it ROCKS! my 301 becomes my backup guitar

Sorry - I have to disagree. The 500 does have an awesome sound but I think slightly thinner that the 301 and certainly the 800

I wish I could engage in this conversation

but I lost out on a PGM 500

I emailed about the 550 and I still did not get a price

Is it gone? Did someone buy it?

I've never played a 500 so I can't really help you compare the tone of the two guitars. Eddie would probably be the best one to ask since he's got both. Someone else on here does too, but I can't remember who it is. --Jason

The 500 (unless it's one of the odd ones with the scarf joint) has the one piece neck with the volute. That's gonna make it feel a little different than the 301 neck. The rosewood fingerboard gives the 500 a different feel and tone as well. It may be all mental, but I've always thought that a maple fingerboard neck has a faster feel to it, and definitely brighter tone. The 500 will have a Tone Zone in the bridge. That gives it a little thicker tone than the PAF Pro in the 301. I can't comment on the HFH in the neck position of the 500 because I haven't played one to compare it to the PAF Pro in a 301. If you want to thicken up the sound of a 301, swap in a Tone Zone. After that, it should be very close in overall bridge tone to a 500. --Jason

The 800 has more pop and punch than the 500. It is also brighter, due to the swamp ash. I can get more tone variations out of the 800, from tele twang to crazy heavy. The 500 is a mellow version of the 800.....a little warmer, a bit spongier (not as much pop/punch).

I would assume the 550 has been bought. Chris said he would let me know if the potential buyer passed on it.

I think the 301 is on par with the 500 but they are different. The fretboards are going to feel different. The different pickups are going to sound different.

Its hard to say which neck is faster. That is going to vary based on who is playing them, and which neck they prefer. Its also going to depend on if it is an old 301 or the new 301 with the 5 piece neck and volute.

When I first got my 200 I was kind of dissapointed with the PAF pro's because it sounded thinner than my 500. After a while I was able to dial in my amp better and get great tones out of the 200. It really depends on what kind of tones you prefer for what pickups are going to suit you better. For lower and mid gain overdrive sounds The PAF pro's in my 200 and Gibson 57 classics in my SG just sound better than the tonezone in my 500. I've come to love the more balanced tone of the PAF style pickups.

500 vs. 301:
the 500 has a thinner neck (mine has a scarf joint if i remember it correctly, i dont have it beside me now) and is slightly easier to play in my opinion. i have no problem on the 301 neck though because it was my main guitar for two years. surprisingly the 500 has a brighter tone than the 301 (for those of you didnt read my past posts, my 301 has the TZ in the bridge). the 500 sounds brighter and more distorted. the 500 weights heavier than the 301. the 301 sounds better on low gain settings.
i love the HFH in the 500. it sounds much cleaner than the paf pro.
i hope i would be able to play (and own) a 800 sometime in the future...

hmmm how would the 10th (mahogany) sound in comparision to the 500 or even 301? is it pop and twang like the 800 or bright like the 500?
