Post 6->12 string conversion
So I just got the Yellow Matter Custard DVD and LOVED the sound of Pauls 12-string custom PGM. I used to play in a cover band years ago that just did 60s rock/pop classics and I always wished I'd had an electric 12 for THAT Beatles sound.

Anyway, I have an Ibanez RG321 with a Gotoh fixed bridge (same as the PGM301) and noticed that Gotoh make a 12-string replacement for it. Now, the question is, what would be the best way of adding an extra 6 tuners to the headstock? I think that they would fit (just) on the opposite edge and the angle between the (new) nut and the tuners wouldn't be too much - comparable with the 6th and 1st on a Les Paul.

So does anyone have any ideas on how stupid an idea this is???

If it was feasable I might even consider buying a new 301 (which has a stronger neck-headstock join) and converting that.

Dave

The only possible problems I can see are : headstock not having enough place, fretboard might be too thin (width), neck might not support added tension.

It looks like it might fit.

It can be done but it would definitely have to be done by someone that knows what they're doing... I wouldn't recommend it be a "first time" project for someone... Placement of those tuning pegs is crucial to intonation and if its not done right, there's nothing worse than a 12 string that doesn't stay in tune...X :wink:

There's not much extra meat on an Ibanez RG style headstock to begin with. Adding those extra tuners seems a little scary to me. Instead of converting your RG321 or a PGM301, you might be better off looking for an RT452. The come up for a sale fairly often, and they usualy don't bring much. --Jason

I don't know if this is a good price but there is a RT452 on http://chrisguitars.com/ right now for $650.

this might not be much help but all i know about converting to a 12 string is that a guy i saw converted his tom delonge fender strat into a 12 strat by changing the bridge and adding tuners, i dont think he had any problems with neck width etc

Ahh....anyhoo, if you do get an RG for 12-string conversion, there are always PGM Ibanez decals floating around eBay (the f-holes). Though you couldn't call it a PGM, it'd have have to be called a PGZM or something cool like that. :)
