Post How tight is the Volume knob on your PGM?
Hey,

to all the PGM owners: how tight is your volume knob on the PGMs?

Mine's pretty tight and it's not easy to turn the volume up or down as I've constantly seen Paul doing on his PGM models.

Although it gives me more control on where the volume is (if I'm looking for a perfect tone), it's not very good when playing live and I have to turn the volume down really quick!

How do I loosen it up?

many thanks!

the one on my 400 turns like butter. Was it always that stiff on yours? you may want to get a new pot.

Mine all turn pretty easily.

If you don't mind dissasembling the pot you can take the back off and bend the wiper arm so there is less pressure on the resistor plate.

If you don't want to do that, maybe buy a new pot or use a volume pedal to quickly turn the vloume down when playing live.

I'll try opening it up.

It's weird cuz mine is like that every since I got my guitar (about 5 years ago) and I thought it would loosen up after some use...

I own or owned most of the PMG's, some I played more than only the one I have. It differs per model I think. But I also read above here someone owns a 400 which is like butter. Mine is in the middel. 500 90ham 301 are normal. 10th and 900 are like butter indeed. 700 also in the middle.

I don't know too much about the volume pot, but the five way switch was the first thing that went on my 301 within a couple of weeks of light use...

I don't own a PGM yet but ALL 3 of my JEMs from 87 & 88 and 1990 RG are loose as fuck, too loose, great for swelling though, must be the age thing? :|

Yeah, I played some Jems and they were REALLY loose.

I haven't played any PGM but my own, though.

Whether you play a JEM or PGM shouldn't matter. Looking at Ibanez parts lists many PGM's use the same volume pots as certain JEM models. There is bound to be variance between parts from all manufacturers. Some batches or a few particular pots are going to be tighter than others.

If you bought yours used I wouldn't be surprised if it was swapped out and someone used a CTS pot. CTS pots are bigger than the stock pots Ibanez uses and are MUCH stiffer that any stock pot I've ever used.
