I don't want to spoil your fun or anything but I don't know, I kindah still don't like the 401 :P IMO it lacks the middle pick-up, and well... where's the ol' good PAF pro? ;) (on the other hand, I have never owned a PGM, or even an Ibanez so paf/tonezone/super distortion are the first quality pick ups I want to have in my guitar :P ). Finish kind of reminds me of Stratocaster/Les Paul types of guitars - you know - more tone, less shred playability ;) That's just the way my brain reacts to the looks of 401 ;)

the placement of a pickup on the guitar has alot to do with the way the guitar is amplified.
it is essentially placed close to where the soundhole on an acoustic would be.

the notes produced are warmer. why, I don't know for sure...you have to hear it.

That is how Paul wanted it. I remember some interview where Paul talked about it giving him a "warmer" sound.
