Post '09 PGM Pricing..
Wow.. I just cannot believe how much Ibanez is asking for the PGM's being made available this year. I'm a big fan of PGM guitars and Ibanez, in general. I just can't see paying this much.

Looks like I'm going to just stick with the 7 PGM's I already have..

check out the JPY (yen) against all other currencies, then check out the historical exchange data, that should answer many of your questions.

Oh, I understand that.. But they're pricing themselves out of a market. Maybe they should move the production elsewhere?

I don't think its just PGM's. They have raised prices on everything.

I'm tempted to get a new guitar with my tax refund, but for 2K I'm considering going for something totally different like a Gibson 339 which would be a few hundred less than the PGM401 or 100RE.

I understand that sometimes prices have to go up. The 401 and 100RE list price is over 30% higher than the 301. Thats not a small increase.

I picked up all my other PGM's up on the used market. It looks likely that streak won't be broken anytime soon. I hope the 401 sells well so there will be plenty of them available on the used market in a few years.

because in a recession the rich are still getting richer....

the working class a ground into the dirt, but as long as the rich still buy guitars, then that will keep ibanez afloat

They're a Japanese company. In the end what matters is how much Yen they're making and they have to spend a lot in Yen.
Seriously just look at the historical exchange rate charts.. that alone will explain a lot. Between beginning of last year and this year Yen is up between 20-25% and they have to put some buffer on more fluctuations this year. So a 30% price increase just to try to survive really isn't out of the left field, IMO.
Unfortunate for us, but can't really put a lot of blame on them either.

How many Fireman's do they plan on selling at $9,000? I don't think they'll be selling many. I'm forty years old and cannot afford nine grand on a guitar. But then again, if I could afford nine grand on a guitar...I would'nt buy it.

Is the 401 out of the question now?

Nicely done, you have a great guitar and some spare money.

The 401 is out of the question until Ibanez lower the price down to around the £900/£1000 mark

Once I've got that I've only got 1 guitar left to buy to complete my dream setup of guitars.

Fender 52 telecaster

I shall be spending my extra cash on pickup upgrades for the new guitar I'm getting tomorrow

Dimarzio Tone Zone (Bridge)
Dimarzio True Velvet (Middle)
Dimarzio Air Norton (Neck)

The 401 is unique to the line of ibanez guitars.

I mean its made of a unique wood, different routes (for the bridge being closer) and a different joint. This all costs money to change the machines accordingly. so it being more expensive than the 301 is certainly understandable. plus its the new shit. new shits always more

As for the price increase for Ibanez. It's really bad this year. I would suggest going used until the economy goes up a bit. I personally re-priced all the ibanez's at my store, and literally marked the jem7v and the JS1000 up 1000cdn. Its a damn shame.
